Peter King ranks Saints #16 in the NFL
Peter King ranks Saints #16 in the NFL
MMQB: Ranking the teams from 1 to 32 - Peter King - SI.com Quote: 16. New Orleans. Now we're getting to the "if only'' area. If only the Saints had gotten Jeremy Shockey, if only Reggie Bush were a more complete NFL back, if only they had Leodis McKelvin on an island this fall instead of Jason David, Randall Gay or Aaron Glenn ... you get the picture. But this is still a team that, with the right breaks and good health, could easily win the NFC South. A quarterback, good lines on both sides of the ball and good-enough receiving weapons make New Orleans a threat every Sunday. But this team has to get off the roller coaster. The Saints started with four losses, followed by four wins, and ended the season with two wins followed by two losses. By the way, Drew Brees threw for 4,423 yards and 28 touchdowns last year ... and no one thought he played that well. That guy is one heck of a quarterback. |

Very few so called experts will pick the NOS any higher then that because of last season. But I like that, just like 06, come from nowhere and win the South.

Re: Peter King ranks Saints #16 in the NFL
Peter King is actually correct with his prediction if you base things on paper. The defense was horrible last year, and it is being rebuilt with a couple of injured line backers, the defensive line has a cast off free agent and a rookie that is expected to start at DT, and the secondary actually did not improve since Mike McKenzie is expected to not be 100 percent at the start of the season, although another rookie and a second tier free agent was brought in to help. On offense the running game was not seriously addressed, which was below average at best last year, the TE position is still what it was, same for offensive line, and the WR group made no significant improvement. It's a great thing to have a QB like Brees to lead this unit. If he gets hurt during the season, the Saints are screwed and can count on picking top 5 in 2009. So yes, King is dead on by his statement that the Saints are ranked 16th.
Now as a Saints fan I hope he is wrong and the Saints finish with a Super Bowl win. Still, looking at the entire NFL, his ranking is pretty fair when considering everything in general. For me, since I can keep up with the Saints better than he can, I at the very least see the 2006 version show up in 2008. I really love the Saints roster at this point, and like everyone else is just hoping the injuries don't nail us. |
