Shaun Alexander? (merged)

Though his release by the Seattle Seahawks initially was met with the soothing melody of crickets rubbing their wings together, running back Shaun Alexander is suddenly hearing the chirping of a cell phone instead.

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that Alexander will follow his visit with the Cincinnati Bengals with a trip to New Orleans, where he’ll visit with the Saints.

The interest in Alexander should be regarded as a bad sign for running back Deuce McAllister, who is recovering from his second torn ACL in three seasons. If Alexander signs, McAllister could be scuttled.

The broader question with Alexander is whether anyone will offer him a deal that he’ll deem to be worthy of his abilities. Our guess is that, in the end, he’ll ink a multi-year deal that will appear to be a big-money package but that on closer inspection will be essentially a one-year deal with a reasonable base salary and lots of incentives.

As we see it, there’s no need for Alexander to rush the process. He’ll avoid all offseason workouts and mandatory minicamps if he doesn’t sign with a team, and his leverage in one or more cities could increase significantly if/when one of the top tailbacks blows out a knee during those non-contact contact practices.

IMO, He would be a great addition to our offense, he could rack up the tough yards along with Deuce and add in Reggie for some outside action...we got ourselves one hell of a backfield.

I don't think you've actually seen Alexander in the last couple of years.

Simply put the guy is a wuss (family friendly you know :D). Falls down if he thinks that a defender is nearby.

The guy doesn't catch. He whiffs on blocks.

Wuss.

The Saints can waste time on him. But just realize there's a reason that he was released from Seattle.

He is done. We don't need any help like that. Stecker and Pierre are better than him.

Alexander making the rounds
Shaun Alexander | Seahawks | Interested: Saints? Bengals?
Alexander is scheduled to visit with the Saints on Wednesday, reports John Clayton.

The free-agent running back met with the Bengals on Sunday and Monday, but that doesn't mean Cincinnati is close to offering Alexander a contract.

Rudi Johnson is coming off a healthy offseason, and Chris Perry should be able to do some things in minicamp after years of injuries. The Bengals also like Kenny Watson and DeDe Dorsey.

I feel that Alexander may be washed up, but it doesn't hurt to bring him in to see if he has anything left. It's pretty simple, let Alexander and Deuce battle it out, if Deuce is anywhere fit to be a NFL running back again then the job goes to Deuce. If Deuce is finished, Alexander is not a horrible option if he has anything left. If both are finished, nothing lost. Cut them both in training camp and move on.

Well if studying for exams wasn't bad enough, this crap had to happen. If Deuce is gone, I'm going to be very upset. He showed that he was willing to do whatever it took to stay a Saint (restructure, rehab, etc) and he still might be gone. What a sad day if he's released.

If I had to choose a Locker Room Buttinski, I take my chances with Shockey, way the ^$%& before S. Alexander!

Shawn's got his meaux, so he don't geaux...

Gimme me Pierre Thomas, (who started for four years, and even ahead of new Steeler Employee Rashard Mendenhall at Illinois the year before)...

He's the first Saint to Rush and Receive for 100yds ea in the same game; that includes present company (USC's finest)...

Hey Pierre may not be sexy when it comes to Fantasy Football; but if he can keep defenses honest, well, that wins games...

I think if he is healthy it is a great addition. I think our line is better than Seattle's line. There is the lack of pass catching ability but we have plenty of RB's for that. He has always had a nose for the goal line though and that is what we need.

If Deuce is unable to perform, then I feel it's PT's turn at the helm.

Definite co-sign here. PT23 runs hard, can catch, and proved that he can carry the load, if only for one game.

It doesnt hurt to bring him in and see what he has left in camp. But I would rather wait and see if the Raiders release Lamont Jordan. If he can stay somewhat healthy, he is the type of back that would truly compliment the others on the roster.

I think the FO wants to sign Alexander and trade Deuce to NY for Shockey. Then, go after a RB in the draft next year. Pierre is good, but he needs a back up too.

All I know is after reading this quote by Deuce:

"I anticipate they'll continue to look at veteran running backs," McAllister said. "They have to have some protection just in case there are any setbacks with my rehab, even though there haven't been any. It never hurts to have a Plan B."

He is the definition of 1st class!! I really hope I never see Deuce in another uniform, not even if it is the deal breaker in the Shockey trade! Also with Fred Thomas gone I would love for Deuce to change his number to 22!!

Saints' courtship of RB Alexander could be a drawn-out process

The Saints scheduled a visit with free-agent RB Shaun Alexander, who was recently cut by the Seahawks, this week, but we hear it's unlikely that a deal between New Orleans and the former league MVP is imminent. Alexander is looking for a team that will give him significant playing time, and the Saints' situation will not allow for any guarantees. If Deuce McAllister is able to return from a torn ACL and microfracture surgery, Alexander likely wouldn't be higher than third on the squad's depth chart, which isn't the role he's pursuing. New Orleans already has one of the deepest backfields in the league, with Reggie Bush, Aaron Stecker and Pierre Thomas also in the mix. However, the team is in wait-and-see mode with McAllister and does not want to get stuck in a similar situation to last season, when Bush struggled after he became the every-down back. If the Saints are able to determine early in training camp that McAllister will be unable to perform at the necessary level, a move to sign Alexander might make sense for both parties. Until then, Alexander will continue to explore other options.
