With all the attention on Drew Brees and his prolific start, turns out the Saints defense is pretty effective, too.

Will Smith had an interception and a sack to help New Orleans shut down the Buffalo Bills for a 27-7 win Sunday.

The Saints prevented the Bills from mustering any type of a threat through three quarters.

That's when Pierre Thomas took over, sealing the win with two touchdown runs in the final 10 minutes. Thomas finished with 126 yards rushing, while scoring on 34- and 19-yard runs for a Saints offense had scored 45 points in each of its first two games.

The Bills offense sputtered, and Terrell Owens was held without a catch, to end a 185-game streak that had been second longest among active players.

Was I disappointed that Brees didn't continue his run? Of course, but you know what? Different environments call for different measures. We couldn't run the ball last year, now we can. Our defense was letting us down, now it isn't. Our offense was blistering, it still is. I thought it was a solid game and if you can win battles like that in a place like Buffalo and grind it out on the ground, knowing that you also have the best Quarterback in the league...surely that means you're going somewhere special. Great game guys, you showed some true grit. Do I get a big WHO DAT!?

YOU GET A BIG WHO DAT!

It's a strong win. Our defense played hard. We know what our offense can do and they will have better days. I think we should be pleased!

Saints defense pitched a SHUT OUT against one of the better offenses in the league.

I agree. Good teams can win when everything goes their way....Great teams can win even if one aspect of their game is not going so well. The defense stepped up and Coach P started running running running. Good coaching, good playcalling, good game.

This was the kind of stuff we wanted to see in that ill-fated Championship game. I really believe that Payton is wising up and at last realises that sometimes you need a hammer, rather than a scalpel, to open up teams. Great playcalling and clock management. And Halo, that certainly was big!

Also, can somebody please tell me what the deal is with 'drinking the Kool-aid'? I see that a lot but wonder why.

Offensively, it wasn't our best game. A year ago it would have been an easy loss, one of those games our defense gave up BIG plays to just about anybody.

This year is different. The offense can sputter, Brees can have a less than stellar performance, but the defense, although it's not the steel curtain, it's very improved. It may be improved enough to fill in the gaps and make us a whole team.

Offense has just had to pretty much outscore teams to win.... for years.

The earliest known use of the term in its figurative sense, is from a 1987 quote about former Washington, D.C., mayor Marion Barry in the Washington Post.
