I have no idea if Hartley is any better, but I'm willing to find out now.

Bag him. Give the kid a shot...after all, that's why he's on the roster.

Thanks for the memories Carney but its time to go with Hartley, the curse of Morten Andersen strikes again, this team hasn't had an automatic kicker since the FO let him go

Re: SO, after Carney missed that short field goal...

Yeah time to bring him in. We are definatly going to need some long FG attempts so why not get him going.

I admit I was screaming for Hartley.

Well I wasn't screaming for Hartley but there needs to be a change at kicker so then the gimmie's aren't heart attack moments

Hartley... you never looked so good.

What about the Falclown's? They missed a few Field Goals too.

I think they were going for it on 4th down a few times, no confidence in their kicker.

There's a reason why Payton has 2 kickers on the roster... and we still have a perfect record.

Re: SO, after Carney missed that short field goal...

I'm playing devil's advocate here...but let's say that Payton lets Carney go now...and we fast forward to the playoffs and Hartley misses a 37 yarder to send the Saints home. Wouldn't that be deja vu all over again for Payton and put him in a rather unpleasant position. I mean, he has already admitted that letting Carney go the first time was a mistake.

exactomundo ...... it's just one miss ....so far .... should a trend develop and continue, then there may be something there.

2nd and 3. Two incompletions. Missed field goal. That brought back memories as well. Run the dang ball!

Exactly. Carney is not playing reliably. I am ready to let Hartley in the game. He was more reliable last season than Carney has been this season. Granted Hartley had some problems in pre-season, but I am ready to take a look. Carrying two kickers only makes sense if the short range kicker is as certain as the sunrise. Carney is not.

Re: SO, after Carney missed that short field goal...

I concur. If he doesn't get field time, tempo with snapper/holder will be off. Rather bring in Hartley now and work out the leg than have to rely on him coming in for the clutch 50 yd attempt with the game on the line after Carney misses some short yarders.

I'm kinda torn on this. Carney has made mistakes, but so has the team....Drew makes bad decisions too. Of course, none of these errors have cost us a game. Still, as much as I'd like to support the experienced veteran (who is normally a model for consistency), I can't help but wonder if we are bracing ourselves for the second coming of Martin Erratica....I am still scarred heavily from the Viking and Bronco games last year.

I'm a bit gunshy too. But we signed Carney for one reason, he's money from inside 40. Well now it appears that may no longer be the case.

I expect he'll be released this week and we sign someone to bolster our special teams. They certainly need it.

Yeah give the Kid his job back. It will also free up a roster spot too.

The difference is Carney does one thing and one thing only: kick FGs.
He doesn't have to read defenses, or coverages, or be aware of the pass rush, etc etc etc etc. He just kicks FGs.

I've been a fan of Hartley since he came in last year. We need for him to keep nailing his field goals and stay consistent. Let's hope he's the next coming of Morten Andersen. ;)

If we haven't used Hartley there is a reason for it. Elam missed 2 as well...maybe the holders farted.

LOL!

Nah. I think while Carney was in forward motion, dropping his leg down for the kick, he farted. The natural swing and rotation of the body created a vortex, therefore pulling the stench of the fart toward Carney's face.

The vortex was created with such force that the farty air hit Carney in the face like he actually had his head next to his own ass. The smell was so pungent and sulfuric, it went directly to Carney's nerves, creating a nerve "shiver", which consequently made his leg twitch and the FG was missed.

In a fart shell, I mean a nut shell; that's what happened.

.. or maybe Elam is not as good as he was after 17 years in the NFL?

So far, Carney has attempted 11 field goals, and he's missed 3, with 2 of those 3 in the 30-39 yard range. Because the team has been scoring a lot of points and end up winning games, no one has really made a stink about it - well, I have :). Monday was the first time those 3 points could've made a difference since the score was so close.

I guess everyone remembers the Jacksonville game, and Carney missing that XP, and a lot of people think that put the Saints out of the playoffs that year, which isn't true. BUT, the one I remember, is the missed field goal in the 2006 NFC championship game, with the score 14-17. The missed field goal gave the Bears good field position, they went on to score, and the Saints never recovered.

Look, nothing against the man, but he's 45, and he's missing some cheap shots.

I agree with you for the most part but in Carney's defense it wasn't him that missed the kick against the Bears, it was Cundiff but he was in there because Carney didn't have the leg strength to try it so I guess it is indirectly Carney's miss.

Re: SO, after Carney missed that short field goal...

cutting carney could've gave us more options at LB, DT, S, and OL

it is worthless for him to be on this team right now......we kept him for his accuracy but now he isnt even accurate......every time he even kicks an extra point it makes me nervous and thats not even mentioning the field goals that he has missed this season

hartley has never missed a field goal for us and there is no reason to expect him to

trying to argue this is weird because its true.....kickers only have one job....but they get far less opportunities to do that one job

if drew makes a mistake, he gets 20 to 30 more chances to make up for it.......kickers may only get 1 shot at it

because of that, i think kicking is one of the most difficult jobs in the NFL.....you are expected to do your 1 job and if you miss once, you are a failure.....how many other positions in ANY sport only get 1 opportunity to do their job correctly?.......off the top of my head, i cant think of any

i think part of the criticism of kickers is completely justified.....but on the other hand, how much of it is unwarranted?

kickers rarely get credit for being able to do their job, but always get ripped for not being able to do their job

i say start hartley the next couple of games and see where he's at. they should be winnable games regardless.

Yep time to say bye bye to carney and give the kid a shot...he showed me more kicking last year than carney has this year and keep in mind hartley hasnt' missed a regular season FG so I think what he done last year at least earns him a chance
