NO Sedrick Ellis = MAJOR run yards

With Sedrick Ellis out we saw some serious impact as the Falcons racked up some yards.

Also, anyone notice that Charles Grant was moving in slow motion again? He just wasn't a factor. He's back to his on again, off again status.

I know Gregg Williams is pissed. They have to tighten up.

Re: NO Sedrick Ellis = MAJOR run yards

i noticed grant getting sucked inside a lot which resulted in turner bouncing it outside and getting big yardage......i understand the aggressiveness but im not a fan of breaking containment and responsibility to be aggressive

will smith looked like he was possessed tonight but since we couldnt get any push up the middle, we struggled to get pressure on matt ryan.....they picked up our blitzes nearly every time......we actually got more pressure on him when we only rushed 3 or 4 because our coverage was much better and ryan didnt know where the pressure(which was actually non-existant) was coming from......he got more flustered in the pocket when we didnt blitz

TAKE NOTES for next time we play the falcons

Canton... exactly. You totally got my point.

We actually did better with fewer down linemen and coverage sacks.

But the run... I have to admit Gregg Williams mixed it up and switch and shifted the line and that at least had some affect.

And yes, exactly, Will Smith looked like he wasn't trying or I don't know what. Maybe it was that all black uni and the socks, he looked like he was just rolling around and barely jogging through plays.

Ellis is missed indeed .... can we still get Dorsey?

Re: NO Sedrick Ellis = MAJOR run yards

Ellis isn't gettng alot of stats but he clearly has been a force in the middle. Fujita is also missed. Plus, Turner is one of the elite RB's in the league. WHO DAT!

Re: NO Sedrick Ellis = MAJOR run yards

From what I saw alot of his yards cames from taking it outside when the middle was clogged. I think our ends for those plays didn't hold the edges.

Grant looked slower tonight but will was getting after it on pass rush. Run Contain well, I'll have to watch the game again on replay and see if i'm wrong.

Shanle played like the old Shanle and Dunbar is a backup for a reason as well.

And where was Clancy?

Michael Turner was running like a man possessed, a large Mike Bell. He wasn't going down with arm tackles last night. We will miss Ellis. How long is he out??

big sed ties up the blockers..hargrove is a great change up but he looked to be swallowed by the double team

I really hope we have Ellis back by the Patriots game. That that the Patties are a huge running team, but we'll need all our guns loaded for that one.

That being said - one game at a time.

I'm going to watch the game again but I don't think the yards were gained because Ellis was out but more the fact that the ends didn't hold containment. All the big runs were bounced outside not between the tackles.

I am FrenzyFan and I support this message.

I thought losing Ellis would hurt, but only in the passing game. He gets a good push up the gut.

I was surprised how much our run defense suffered without him.

Yup thats why I noticed him not playing much in the second half.

I was more impressed with Turner than anything else. The guy is a load. Not only that but he runs sideways as good as anybody I've ever seen.

Give credit to this man. :bartinator:

overcompensating in the middle was a huge reason for breaking containment.....they were getting a push up the middle and because of that grant got caught out of position trying to fill the void

you will notice when you watch the game again how often grant gets sucked inside

Either way you slice it, him being out is going to hurt us. He hurt his MCL and will be out 4-6 weeks. We are really going to need him for the Pats game. Im also concerned with Carolina's run game. They have been running the ball well the last couple of weeks.

They ran on the OUTSIDE. Ellis could not have changed that.

Michael Turner was running like a man possessed. Is and understatement. It was like he was when he first showed up with the Falclowns.

the runs were not designed to go outside tho

it was clear that turner was trying to run up the middle and only bouncing outside when he realized the DEs were crashing in and breaking containment

That is a concern .... that and the recent propensity for turnovers. We are looking much less invincible now.

Agreed. When he did go up the middle Vilma met him in the hole. And Vilma won that battle. But Vilma and the others had a hard time bring him down in open space. And I see why Dunbar is just a backup. When he met Turner in the hole, Turner flat out ran over him. When will we get Scott F. back?

Good point. Not having our best DT affects the entire line.

Having Ellis may have allowed our D-line to play a bit wider, or those runs clogged up the gut may have become tackles, instead of Turner bouncing it outside.

And you can't deny Ellis's penetration disrupting the play from the start, not allowing the play to develop as easily, we probably didn't shift and stunt as much as we would had Ellis been in, and you can't ignore what his leadership brings to the entire line.

Yes the DE's (Charles slo-mo Grant in particular) certainly played badly, but not having Ellis affected the entire D-line.

Papa Voodoo 11-03-2009 12:53 PM

Re: NO Sedrick Ellis = MAJOR run yards

Grant looked like he was the guy getting the double teams since Ellis was out. Those runs weren't the D-Line. If they forced Turner outside on inside runs they did their job. The LB's and DB's took A LOT of bad angles and missed tackles for what should have been short gains.

not saying they're terrible by any means, but i've always been dissapointed in grant and smith.

Re: NO Sedrick Ellis = MAJOR run yards

Every since Ellis went out last week teams have been running better against us...I can really see the difference in pressure generated by our D line. There was just no way that Grant was going to come on strong and look good all year. He hasn't been conditioned to play hard the last couple of years and I think he's running out of motivation.
