Our luck is about to run out

Glad as anything we managed to hold on for 9-0 today, but we MUST start playing better.

Turnovers and slow starts, along with all these injuries on the defense are going to result in a short postseason if we don't correct what we can...

I can't get into this right now. My nerves are shot.

Game should have never been this close. We tried our best to give it away today...

I agree we need to play better, but the simple fact is injuries are killing us

Re: Our luck is about to run out

Better to get these games and injuries out of the way in week 10 rather than have them happen later. This team seems to be able to find ways to win. In the past they havent had that. The defense seems to come up big when they need to even with the injuries they are going through.

So do the injuries mean -

2009 D - Sharper - Greer - Porter = 2008 D

???

This had the look and feel of the loss to Washington last year...

And the difference is that this year they still won.

Greer and Sharper should be back next week.

Porter. Well, remains to be seen.

Well you have to add KC and SE to that too. That is 5 people, and yes KC is done for the year so no need to keep mentioning him, but yeah- it hurts bad

Re: Our luck is about to run out

So much for thinking that this was a gimme. It looks like last years defense is playing and these crappy first half games are disturbing. It seems as if the Saints are going to have to use a lot of stop-gaps again this year because of injuries.

Bottom line though is that the Saints are 9-0 and the Falcons are 5-4 with one of those losses from the Saints.

The mistakes in blocking and the lack of a power running game could be a detriment to our post season progress. I don't know how much longer the ball will bounce our way, so let's hope that they can fix these problems and keep the good luck that we've had. It looks like we could be playing short in the secondary for a while.

Tampa will be no gimmie next week, either.

They have been playing much better the past few weeks (why not, they have nothing to lose).

Division game on the road - we better have the chin strap on tight next week...

The offensive turnovers are bothering me! Agree

the thing is, we've played horrible these past couple weeks, havent put in a complete game, but still won.....alot of good teams have put in crappy performances as well, but the difference is, they lost those games, we didnt. Sky is not falling. Yes, injuries are mounting. Ellis will be back in a couple weeks, same for Sharper and Greer. Yea, Porter's injury doesnt look good, but we will have to see. All in all, we are still undefeated......

Re: Our luck is about to run out

The injuries are literally killing us, but I still think that no injury is hurting our defense worse than Sedrick Ellis. When you have to put 8 and 9 in the box to stop the run, it really opens up the passing game(which makes the injuries in the secondary that much worse). The TP injury is bad(especially if hes out for the year). That being said, the offense is making too many mistakes. Not sure what is wrong with Drew Brees, he's making throws I've never ever seen him make before. The high point of the game was Reggie Bush, who actually looked like a feature back that could run the ball between the tackles. Quite frankly, this was the first game I've watched since Bush has been there that I was sitting back saying that they need to give him the ball. He looked explosive and was waiting on his blacks and bursting their the hole. The Saints even with the way they played, should have won the game a lot worse than what they did. The fumble by Colston at the one foot line sucked, and the whole game it just felt like we were trying on purpose to make little mistakes to keep the Rams in the game. Sean Payton had one of his worst coaching days. For a guy that has so much confidence in his offense, it was almost like he was purposely taking the ball out of his playmakers hands. 4th and 2 and run Eckel? Kind of risky to take the guy thats been there for 2 weeks and put the game on his back. The punt was pretty bad too, and I'm not sure what in the hell Morstead was doing? A net 15 yard punt when the Rams have a chance to get the ball back and win the game? He booted the damn thing in the stands. I think we'll be fine though to be honest. Even with the injuries in the secondary, I think Ellis returning will help the backups a ton. I just don't hope Harper is out for the year. The offense isn't clicking and hasn't been for the last 3-4 weeks and we are still 9-0. Defense has to get better though.

Absolutely agree. As soon as he went out it was like the frigan flood gates opened- as far as running on us. I am sure some of it coincides with the teams we played being good running teams, but even so. Great point!

Yep the O play is bothering me too, and I think LM coming back could help with our o some too

This is what I mean any given team can beat any given team on any given day. Good teams find a way to win.

For some reason I think a lot of football fans assume that just because your team is supposedly better, that it should be an easy victory. The best team gets upset all the time in college football, and I can promise you the difference between the talent on the teams in the NFL are closer than in college.

Re: Our luck is about to run out

Glad to sneak out a win today but there are sure causes for alarm. Tampa may be even tougher than St. Louis was. We desperately need to get healthy on the defense. Having Greer and Sharper out and losing Porter exposed our weak secondary. Randall Gay is not a starting CB and he repeatedly displayed that. Young and Jenkins fared slightly better but are downgrades when forced in. I totally agree that the biggest issue we face is having Ellis out. The fact that we struggle versus the run is directly correlated to opponents becoming more effective in the pass.

My other favorite quote these days is "The better team doesn't always win".

Re: Our luck is about to run out

One of the great things about being a fan is that we can be OVERLY critical, HIGHLY enthusiastic and BITTERLY disgusted with just about everything our team does ...

I think we ALL love the Saints, but if we look at this team subjectively we really have to admit ... Sometimes its better to be lucky than to be good. We've been lucky for 4 weeks in a row now ... And I agree --- that luck is about to run out. I think we get absolutely throttled next week in Tampa, but I thought we'd get beat in either this game or the next one.

It won't mean that it's time to give up, hang our heads, or that 'our year' is over ... it will be what it is --- our luck running out.

By the way, WTF is going with SP game management lately? Unreal.

I'm pissed right now ...

Guys and gals our games have been this way forever. We usually lost them and now we're winning them. Ugly or anything else it doesn't matter to me I have nothing to complain about. 9-0 BABY

True ... but I think everyone is looking for some assurance that the team we saw the first five weeks is the team we are going to see down the line, and not the team continually turning the ball over. I think Ellis comes back real soon, maybe in time for the New England game.

Anybody still thinking undefeated season now? NOT!

We do need to keep pace with the Vikings, as we sure do not want to go there to play for the NFC championship game. Perhaps Brees and company can find it within themselves to get out of this funk and not only FINISH the games as they are now doing, but ALSO FINISH THE SEASON STRONG.

jnormand 11-15-2009 07:39 PM

Re: Our luck is about to run out

It was frustrating and irritating to watch the mistakes today. Colston's deal is a one time thing....Brees is just being himself. He wasn't rattled, he just sometimes feels like it's last year and he has to do everything. I don't know if over confident is the word, but maybe pressing too much. He is a gamer and one of the best in the NFL, but he has to chill and stop the forced throws. He's had a lot of turnovers the last few weeks. Fumble and Ints.

The defense played pretty good in the second half. Really. The secondary needs some help and we all know that the guys back there can't start every week if we want to win. Greer and Sharper are a must. The offense needs to pull their heads out of their rear ends and start putting up numbers in the first half AS WELL as the second half.
