Somebody explain our Running Game to me
 

I noticed drew threw the ball 49 times today but we only ran the ball 24 times for 55 yards

why did we throw the ball so much? was it that we couldnt run? or was it that we didnt run?

or was it that the redskins secondary was so bad that it was better to throw that many times even tho they were the #1 ranked pass defense?

why arent we staying balanced anymore?

Because we were behind all day and the run was getting stuffed.

so maybe the real question is.......why the **** were we playing catch up to the redskins

They were pretty much stuffing the run on our guys. Bell did hardly anything, and Pierre didn't get many handoffs. No one averaged more than 3 YPC. Pierre was huge in the passing game off of screens, though. Plus, we were playing from behind for a lot of the game, so they had to pass more.

Because the defense didn't step up until the last couple of minutes of regulation and overtime.

Their d was all over our run, for the most part. There weren't a ton of holes.

Basically, our O-line got man-handled. It looked like our boys didn't have their legs after the short week.

They got their 2nd wind late however.

Danno and Boutte are right. And our secondary looked really slow too.

Washington played a great game and luck was on our side, but it was tougher match up thanks to injuries and the short week away game.

No excuse, just fact.

We use the pass to open up our running game. If you ever notice we throw a lot on 1st and 10. Doing this also makes 2nd, 3rd more managable.

Not a shocker... Albert Haynesworth and Cornelius Griffin are two stout tackles. We're not going to be able to run over everyone every week. I figured this game would be tough and come down to the wire... I'm glad we came out on top. Great game.

Yep, Danno nailed it. OL was man handled, also on the short yardage runs, I thought it was ridiculous to pull Evans giving the skins a open lane for penatration and catching the RB's from behind before reaching the line.

The Skins were ready for us. Haynesworth is a monster in the middle, and they were bringing up their LBs on run blitzes to fill all the gaps. They also had good pursuit from the backside. It also looked to me like Bell was lining up too far in the backfield on those short yardage runs. By the time Drew handed the ball off, a defender was already on Bell. I would have preferred a QB sneak or a quick hitter with the FB on the plays where we had less than a yard to get the first. It may also be that our linemen were a bit sluggish coming off the short week after a big game and playing in poor conditions.

Skins were blowing through the hole vacated by the pulling guard. Just poor execution by the OL.

Haynesworth knows how to stop the run. He can be blocked in one lane and make the tackle in another. I credit him for our lack of running ability early on, I think he left later in the game and Payton went back to the run.

The Redskins watched the tapes from the week before. During the Monday night game against New England, our offensive line was able to manhandle the defense of the Patriots, creating big holes at will. Washington studied this and they completely shut down New Orleans' running game. Plus, I think the Redskins are better than their record reflects. I told everybody in my office last week that the Saints better not take the Redskins lightly, they almost beat the Cowboys the week before. And as bad as I hate to say it, the Cowboys are pretty tough. I was glad to see them get stomped by the Giants. All of the dropped passes by the Saints on Sunday didn't help our cause either. We better show up with a better game in Atlanta.

i agree. in the 3rd quater i as thinking to myself "**** running the ball, we need to spread the field" and thats what happened. great adjusment by SP at the end of the game
