Saints Sign CB Marcus McCauley
NewOrleansSaints.com Tuesday, December 08, 2009 - 4:30 PM New Orleans Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis announced Tuesday that the club has signed free agent cornerback Marcus McCauley and waived cornerback Chris McAlister. The club also placed linebacker Jo-Lonn Dunbar on injured reserve. McCauley is a third-year player who originally entered the NFL as a third-round draft pick of the Minnesota Vikings (72nd overall) in 2007. The 6-1, 203-pound Fresno State product has played in 27 career regular-season games – all but one of them with the Vikings – with 10 starts, and has tallied 66 tackles, 10 passes defensed and five tackles on special teams. The 26-year old Rancho Cordova, Calif. native has also played in one career postseason game, making one tackle on special teams. He was waived by the Vikings at the conclusion of the 2009 preseason and has subsequently had stints with the Detroit Lions and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, playing in one game for Detroit. McAlister was signed by the Saints as a free agent November 18 and played in two games with the club, making four tackles with a forced fumble that he also recovered. The 11-year veteran defender spent his previous 10 seasons with the Baltimore Ravens. Dunbar is a second-year player who has played in nine games this season with three starts, making 16 tackles on defense and adding 12 more stops on special teams. He suffered hamstring injury in the Saints’ victory at Washington Sunday that will end his 2009 season. New Orleans Saints - Saints Sign CB Marcus McCauley |
Re: Saints Sign CB Marcus McCauley
I would have liked to see McAllister given more time to get into game shape, but he did play poorly against the Redskins and Payton Inc. has had a couple of full weeks to evaluate him. Good luck Chris... if we win a Superbowl, I think you still get a ring!
I remember McCauley being highly touted out of college, supposely first round talent, but slipped because of a poor combine... especially the 40 yard dash. |

I'll bet there's another player to be announced. probably Brooks or that other LB we looked at around mid-season. |
Re: Saints Sign CB Marcus McCauley
Does this mean that Jabari Greer and/or Tracy Porter will be out much longer than we had hoped?
Or, are the Saints just going to keep our two starting corners on the shelf until the playoffs to make sure we are healthy there? |
Re: Saints Sign CB Marcus McCauley
Loomis better be careful making to many moves could back fire in the locker room.

Re: Saints Sign CB Marcus McCauley
Some team (Atlanta maybe) is going to sign CMac.

Re: Saints Sign CB Marcus McCauley
I will be the first to admit that these guys
in charge know way more than I do, about personell, but still, this switching players every week, can't be good for "team play". Consistency of players creates a better team game. Not switching potential starters every week. |
Re: Saints Sign CB Marcus McCauley
In Loomis I trust.

Fresno State: One of the best cover cornerbacks in the country ... a consensus preseason All-WAC slection ... a fast, physical player who has excelled against some of the nation's top receivers ... coming off a breakout year that saw him become more consistent and one of the teams' top defensive players ... a lockdown player, who can play man-to-man against anyone ... doesn't have a lot of career interceptions because teams don't throw at him very often ... is very strong and a great open field tackler ... named to the 2006 Bronco Naqurski Award watch list ... ran a 4.31 40-yard dash during NFL Timing Day.

I still DONT like the way they handled McCalister though. YES, i know that we all dont know wut goes on behind closed door's & that there's more to it, but even though he's a lil older now, he still can play. He did struggle a bit with WASH, but i'd had liked for him to have had atleast another week or so too let him get back on his feet!!! (That's just me though) |

Re: Saints Sign CB Marcus McCauley
No kidding... I must have him confused with someone else. I thought it was his speed that made his draft stock drop.

Re: Saints Sign CB Marcus McCauley
I think its perfect to bring in some people and see if they are hungry to play. You come in do what GW wants or needs, make plays and you have a job. Don't cut you next week. We got a younger player who may develop and play ST's. Curious to see how this pans out.

Re: Saints Sign CB Marcus McCauley
Its a cut throat business, but I agree with others that it does throw off the rhythm in the team to keep switching guys in and out. I think we are a no nonsense team this year and if you arent cutting the mustard we part ways with you. This is beautiful because this is how championship caliber teams think.

Re: Saints Sign CB Marcus McCauley
I wonder what went wrong with McCauley at Minnesota? He was projected to possibly be a 1st rounder and he went in the third. Our FO has given us some nice talent to work with that hadn't worked out some where else. Let's hope he's a diamond in the rough and we can do good things with him.

Re: Saints Sign CB Marcus McCauley
If it helps the "D" to give up less points - go for it!! (Hel if it helps sign Papa SMurf)
Just beat the Falcons & beat the Cowgirls - PLEASE!!! |
Re: Saints Sign CB Marcus McCauley
Guys, if I remember correctly, this was a kid that we discussed leading up to the draft as somebody that a lot of people wanted. He was a really good player at Fresno State.

Re: Saints Sign CB Marcus McCauley
Yes he got some attention lets hope the goons that had him didn't know what they had and GW can coach him up and make him an all-pro.

The Vikings: McCauley released The Vikings have released former third-round pick Marcus McCauley. McCauley was in a battle for one of the final roster spots, but his inability to be an asset on special teams likely was his undoing. He was battling with Karl Paymah and Benny Sapp. McCauley, though, will get picked up, perhaps by the Detroit Lions. While he hasn't excelled for the Vikings, he's flashed enough potential that he won't be available for long. McCauley released - Vikings Now The Lions: sign Chuck Darby, release Marcus McCauley By Tom Kowalski September 29, 2009, 6:12PM ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions signed veteran defensive tackle Chuck Darby on Tuesday, perhaps an indication that rookie Sammie Hill is a little banged up. Lions coach Jim Schwartz wasn't asked about Hill's status at Monday's news conference, but he wouldn't have revealed much information anyway. Hill, Detroit's rookie fourth-round draft pick, started the first three games. Darby was released by the Lions in training camp. To make room for him, the Lions released cornerback Marcus McCauley. Lions sign Chuck Darby, release Marcus McCauley Bucs released CB Marcus McCauley. Bucs released CB Marcus McCauley. He was dumped in favor of Mike Mickens, who the Bucs signed off the Cowboys’ practice squad. McCauley has serious talent, but has never been able to put it together in four in stints with four different NFL clubs Marcus McCauley | Sporty Twits Marcus McCauley CB 6' 1 203 Fresno St. 4.48 By: Robert Davis McCauley was a reserve as a freshman, but moved into the starting lineup as a sophomore and hasn’t slowed down since. As a sophomore, he picked off three passes to go with 31 tackles, three for loss, and a sack. As a junior, he had 45 tackles, two for loss, and an interception. McCauley finished his career with 55 tackles, three of them coming for loss this season. There isn’t much more you can ask for physically out of a corner. McCauley has it all. He has very good size, and matches up very well with bigger wideouts. His combination of height and jumping ability allow him to make plays on the ball with receivers a few inches taller. He doesn’t give up anything to the smaller receivers either. McCauley has the speed to keep up with any receiver well down the field.. He has a chance to be an all around standout cornerback. McCauley has all the physical gifts, he just needs to play up to them on a more consistent level. He relies on his talent too much, and is too aggressive trying to make the big play. Marcus McCauley played with second rounder Richard Marshall as a junior, and he is more talented. He did not have the year expected of him, but his combination of talent will get him drafted very high. Marcus McCauley Weaknesses Not a real killer when tackling. Lacks a bit of polish in pass defense. Needs to be coached up. Can guess wrong and take poor angles. Content to let others do the work if the ball is going the other way. Had an average senior year, and never reached anywhere near the kind of game-to-game consistency his coaches and fans were hoping for. Marcus McCauley, CB, Fresno State They seem to have him pegged out of the box in the draft. |
Re: Saints Sign CB Marcus McCauley
I looked up this guys stats(none) and I heard Williams and Peyton talk about him and they speak highly. I don't know if they are just saying that to get them thru the season until porter and greer is happy. I hope this is another one of those Moore, Colston,Thomas pickups
