Interesting observation in Gregg Williams Presser

1 Attachment(s)
Are you happy with your pass rush?

"Right now, we are a work on progress. We are very opportunistic. We've improved the pass rush a lot. We're going to have to be able to do some things in manufacturing pressure, and to be honest with you, I've put those guys in an awful lot of three-man rush. We've had the three-man rush a lot around here so that I can help the guys in coverage that are having to play all of a sudden coming off the street that really haven't had a training camp. You really can't put the emphasis on both areas, so when I've had to put the emphasis in the coverage element, especially these last three weeks really, we probably led the National Football League in three-man rush the last three weeks."

I read that too, but that's not going to work against Romo. He mucks it up when he is under pressure. When he isn't under pressure he kills secondaries. Like him or not that's a fact.

I still say JAM the WRs at the line. Throw them off thier rythym & it will throw ROmo off of his!!

Exactly what I was wondering- I was thinking that we have had to scale back our aggressiveness due to the injuries. Yep sounds about right, and I'll tell you- it really shows how much of a team game this is

Not worried in the least about Williams or our D.

He's is going to do what he needs to do and make adjustments. Thats what its all about. Something we have haven't had year over the years. Its made all the difference in the world. Seriously all he has to do is create 2-3 turn overs a game and its a blow out. We don't have the D yet to shut people down yet it'll take a couple of years to get the people we need in the mean time, hince the term "opportunistic", get a couple of turn overs and Payton sticks the fork in it.

Good point Euph. Payton is to offensive what Williams is to defense. They help each other help this team win.

But when we aren't sending 3 or 4 we are sending the farm :-)

Good point. Unfortunately it hasn't worked. I've seen too much of Randall Gay trying to get by a 320 OT, and that really hasn't been working out

The Saints don't have three DL players that can get a pass rush in a rush 3 only scheme. One on one Smith, Ellis, Hargrove, and McCray can get some pressure. One on one with help will shut them down. Let McKenzie and Jenkins use their size, man up, bring the pressure and let the chips fall where they may. When QB's Campbell and Redman throw for over 300 on you, it's time to go to Plan B. WHO DAT!

As provided by the New Orleans Saints, here is a transcript of defensive coordinator Gregg Williams press conference Thursday.

Are there any concerns about the way your defense has played the last two weeks?

Gregg Williams"We've played well enough to win, and the big thing is that we still do a good job of attacking the ball, and the guys that were playing, the guys that we're rotating in, I've been really pleased that they've fought as hard as they've done. You can measure a lot of things, but you can't really measure a person's will. Our guys' strength and resolve at the end of ballgames have been really good. We've let a couple of big plays hit us here the last couple weeks that we've done a good job of the last several weeks of not letting it happen. It's kind of risen up the last couple of weeks, and we have to minimize those shots down the field as kind of a territorial thing."

What kind of challenge do the Cowboys present offensively?

"They're talented. These guys get off the bus. They're unbelievable, great-looking, physical-looking players. We're going to have to be able to win the battle at the line of scrimmage. They've done a good job coaching. It's a veteran coaching staff. They're battle tested. I'm really familiar with the division that they play in. They have weapons in the receiving game. I think they have a triple-headed monster at the running back position. You have to be aware of what running back's in the ballgame and what style of runs you're going to get. They can do just about any style of offense. They have done the Wildcat also. Going against Tony (Romo) as many times as I have, when he gets hot, he's a tough guy to get off the field."

Do you consider them to be productive?

"They're very productive. They've been a very productive offense. They've been able to move the ball against any defense they've gone up against this year."

Do you attribute some of the big plays in the secondary to inexperience?

"Some of it's experience. Some of it's we have to do a better job of not allowing the time. When a quarterback has as much time as he wants to pad the football, to set, pump fake and not get put on the ground, sometimes that's rush, sometimes that's coverage. There's been a couple times when we've not played the situation right or real well. Washington with Malcolm (Jenkins) was a learning experience. They hit him on a short-yardage play. You talk about taking the cheese. He was the mouse that took the cheese in the rat trap. On some of the other ones, secondary wise, Darren (Sharper) bit on a double move last week. There was a max protection where they sent out very few receivers down the field, because they were afraid of the pressures. We just have to do a better job of winning one-on-ones, and it doesn't make a difference if a one-on-one is in coverage. You see interceptions being made. It's not always a guy catching the ball, it's a guy making him throw an errant pass. You get a chance to sack a quarterback, it's because the first or second read was taken away from the quarterback, which caused him to hold the ball a little bit longer. The last two games, they have gotten rid of the football very, very fast. You time all the snaps in the passing game, the ball was coming out very, very fast, so we have to do a better job of covering."

Are you happy with your pass rush?

"Right now, we are a work on progress. We are very opportunistic. We've improved the pass rush a lot. We're going to have to be able to do some things in manufacturing pressure, and to be honest with you, I've put those guys in an awful lot of three-man rush.
