The Saints have re-signed FB Kyle Eckel, a league source told NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora.

Eckel first joined the Saints on Oct. 29 and played in five games, starting once. He was released Dec. 8.

Eckel has 175 yards and two touchdowns in 22 career games with the Saints, Eagles, Patriots and Dolphins.

I love this move. We can definitely used him to provide some protection for Brees without banging up our running backs. We may or may not not need him against Tampa Bay, but in the playoffs, he could come in very handy.

it has to be because shockey is hurt and they need Dave Thomas to stay at TE and not play FB.

Or Bush who is a great blocking back but pulled up with a slightly pulled hamstring.

Yeah, it's def for blocking. D. Thomas has done well flexing as a TE, but we need him running routes. Reggie does block well, but of course he is nicked up right now. (as usual)

I'd said this when we loss him, I'll say it again - Heath Evans was a big loss. Yes, we managed to keep winning but it's a game like the Cowboy's game where it comes back to bite you. His blocking was outstanding. Guy could run block and pass protect all day.

Yep. Plus Eckel could signal the rest of others.

I agree about Heath Evans. That was a huge loss. But I thought that Eckel was cut because he was a subpar blocker and horrible special teams player? I guess we are getting desparate at the FB position. I did notice that Terrelle Smith was released.

Could be that his style of play fits what they need for the Tampa Game. He could be cut next Monday and a better fit for the Carolina game is signed.

Looks like a typical 55-56 man roster shuffle to me. Keep him in the loop learning more and more of our sytem because we could need him the way our injuries are piling up.

Terelle can't catch .... plus does he not have back issues?

Our running game should improve with a real Fullback...

It's obvious to me that blocking has dropped off lately and this move is probably Payton trying to fix that. I agree that Heath Evans was a huge loss. We have to do something to give Drew and the running backs a little more time.
