METAIRIE, La. – For the sixth time in two seasons, the Saints sent a player to Philadelphia for sports hernia surgery.

Safety Usama Young is the most recent player having an injury that’s becoming more and more common, something Head Coach Sean Payton said has as much to do with technology as anything.

“It’s tricky because often times you’ve got symptoms of a groin,” Payton said. “I think the approach we take immediately is when that comes up, we ask the question is it more than that. There’s no question that 10 years ago these things healed on their own and it was a long groin. And now I think we’re getting players back quicker and the procedures help that.”

Young joins cornerback Jabari Greer and left tackle Jammal Brown as players who have had the surgery this season, with Greer’s coming two weeks ago and Brown’s coming in August. Both defensive end Will Smith and linebacker Jonathan Vilma had the same surgery this offseason and tight end Jeremy Shockey had it during the 2008 season.

In all cases, Dr. William Meyers has done the procedure and in all cases other than Brown, who is out for the season with a hip injury, the players have come back or are expected to come back healthy.

Greer is set to return in the next few weeks and already is practicing on a limited basis.

The key now is to try and find a way to keep these types of injuries to a minimum.

“It’s a unique number,” Payton said. “I think we constantly pay attention to the experts in that field and try to continue to look at the different ways we’re practicing.”

whats the averages on other ballclubs , thats what everyone would be wondering. or is it 8-saints to 2 for the rest of league, that would be terrible. thats why coach payton says something about the way they practice would have to be looked into big time
