WRs good or what?

One serious thought.
With Brees - our WRs are very good.
With Brunell - our WRs were poor, despite Brunell IMO getting more time than Brees had the last 2 weeks.

I believe we have a great set.
Meachem is a stand-out receiver.
Colston is very good although some poor handling for him this year, Colston, Henderson is a deep threat but has suffered a little from inaccurate throws from Brees of all people.
Moore, not enough playing time.

(And of course we have Shockey and Bush who catch the ball very well).

So are our WRs very good, average, poor?

They looked open all day yesterday. If Brees plays we score 45.

On that basis, let's hope Brees stays in the game!

brunell couldnt hit the broad side of a barn yesterday. men were open like crazy and he couldnt get them the ball. if brees played 2 series we win

The only blip is that Meach fumble. Can't really blame Brunell on that one.

True dat, exile. Mind you, I am not having a downer on Meachem for that. He has had a wonderful season so far. And maybe that is a just in time wake up call.

We do suck at backup QB ..... who can we get for next year? Tebo in the third round? Kolb from the Iggles? Garcia?

Re: WRs good or what?

Brees makes the WR's better. I'm concerned about Henderson and Moore. Henderson has dropped a few, seems not in the game mentally, and hasn't made a big play in a long time. He's going to have to make a couple if the Saints are going to win. Moore just can't get on the field. The Saints need the first down catches he brings to the table.

BRUNELL.... ya could tell he is old... and hasn't played in couple years..... GAH !!!! we really don't have a better backup ... I mean really... AS far as WR.... lol Looked like meachum wanted the old man off the field... hahaaha I think they are fine....

Re: WRs good or what?

There should be some very good options for backup QB going into next year. It's possible veteran guys like Marc Bulger, Jake Delhomme, and Chad Pennington will be available. Right now the Saints don't really need to use a draft pick at the position.

As for WRs, collectively I would have to place the Saints close to elite status. Individually, very good to excellent. Top 4 WRs are all starting material. Not to mention 2 quality starters at TE, and a very nice group of running backs who do a nice job catching passes.

Re: WRs good or what?

Colston loses concentration sometimes and drops ball he should catch. Overall they're young and each is a playmaker in their own right.

Re: WRs good or what?

Were set at wide reciever..now backup QB is another story...I would like to see Chad Pennington come in...he has a noodle for an arm.. but smart and a good game manager..I think he would fit well in this system..

Re: WRs good or what?

If we go hurry up, which we should do every time we have the ball unless we're up by 21, we will need someone like Moore back in the mix because we run at least one go/deep pattern every pass play and that wears those guys out. Meachem, Colston, Henderson aren't enough. Moore and healthy TE's are necessary.

If Moore can't return, we should be looking for additional help. Does Roby actually play WR?

Yeah Roby has been in at wide reciever this year...Moore needs to play hurt or not..suck it up this is the playoffs..

Re: WRs good or what?

I think solid would be the best word to describe our WR's. Is it just me or does it look like Colston can't break a tackle to save his life? Considering how big he is, it seems that with any contact he goes down.

Re: WRs good or what?

Good to very good. Too many mental mistakes in key situations to be considered elite. Obviously Brees makes them that much better, but a possession type like Moore was sorely missed, especially in the second half of the season. Shock and other TEs also need to step it up.

Re: WRs good or what?

There's never an excuse for a pro football player to drop a ball that hits his hands, but its somewhat awkward to catch a ball that's spinning the opposite way. Brunell's a lefty. No excuse, but still could explain 1 or 2 of the weird drops.

Still, Brunell wasn't splitting hairs out there with his accuracy haha, leaving people out to get smoked by Jon Beason. Did anyone notice how HORRIBLE the announcers were?? I wanted to beat Billick over the head with his "route tree". They incessantly had to tell us how physically dominating the Panthers were to our backups. Annoying much?

Re: WRs good or what?

fwiw.....on a completely different note......one of the mock drafts i was checking out has us drafting mardy gilyard from cincy

id be pretty excited to get him because he is a WR built like reggie and if the rumors of our marriage with reggie ending are true, then we need to find someone to replace him

gilyard was easily the best player on cincinatti despite the major hype surrounding tony pike

pike's only hope was to hit gilyard in stride and watch him go.....without gilyard, pike would've been benched in favor of collaras.......if we dont go with a defensive player i would be 100% behind us picking up mardy gilyard

Re: WRs good or what?

i thought brunell was late getting the ball out, and under threw a lot of deeper passes. meachem could've had a big day. as a group i think our wr's are very good, and am comfortable with meachem or roby playing in place of moore.

how bout adrian arrington getting some playing time lol he would have to stay healthy tho lol

Re: WRs good or what?

I'd be all over the drafting of Gilyard only if he was BPA. This team needs more help on defense and this draft should be used to give GW more toys to work with on that side of the ball. Now if some stud on offense was to fall then I could see Sean picking him in a heart beat

Please God not Jake. Steve Smith bailing him out over and over is the only reason he lasted as long as he did. We be better off bailing Ryan Leaf outta jail. Just say NO to Jake...

I have to agree and hope a draft pick is used for some good Defensive backs. Lets put McKenzie back on the street. He either shines or sh1ts. No consistency.

i think one of the issues here is that the past few games, our offense hasnt been able to put up the points we were at the beginning of the season

10?
17?
17?

those are our last 3 games

up to that point in the season our lowest scoring output was 26 points

if we would've scored 26 points in any of those 3 games we would've won them

our offense is stagnant right now and adding a young spark would be huge

gilyard is a percy harvin type of player without the height....he is very steve smith esque with his crisp route running and his crazy speed and athleticism

if he is available to us in the second round i would love to pick him up......a WR, TE, or RB wouldnt hurt in this draft and an offensive linemen is always the right decision

TheOak 01-05-2010 10:42 AM

Re: WRs good or what?

I agree with you that the Offense has gone a little cold. However those scores have been victories by other teams this season. Other teams win games scoring 10-14 points per game because their defense can stop the run and pass. Our ability to out score other teams took the focus off of the Defenses inability to stop the run.

If we shut the run down. Force them into the air Sharper ends the season with 4-5 more interceptions.

A strong D that keeps opponents to 10 points or less makes all but one of those losses a win.

Re: WRs good or what?

Our group is as good as any in the league. We have size, speed, quickness and pretty good hands throughout the bunch. They get the blues sometimes but that's a part of the struggle to keep your game at a high level once you make it to the highest level. We do need a gooood backup QB though...Man! I thought Brunell had a better pea-shooter than that. He was borderline awful. Let's hope Brunell was just playing possom in order to fool our playoff opponents. He did a good job - fooled me too.

Re: WRs good or what?

I'd say that our wide receivers are good to very good. Once again, I have to thank our receivers coach Curtis Johnson. As far as a backup QB I'd like to see us go after Kolb, he was really good in the Philly game. If not Pennington was coming on before each of his injuries. And as far as Drafting defense goes the only way I would draft offense is if a fine O lineman became available. We would have stayed consistent longer with a better O line.
