Re: Finally some love from Houston

Finally, indeed. These guys that do sports media here bore the hell out of me. Pound for Pound, Houston is the lamest sports town in America.

It wasnt always like this. When Bum was here, and the whole town had a flavor & a vibe, despite being infected with Cowboys traitors. The Astros & Rockets carried the fever thru the offseason, and even though, like N.O., there were no rings to show-- people had a great time, and it was a party.

Drive by any school now and what do you see? Soccer fields! Freakin SOCCER. What country are we? (Apparently we're Mexico now, judging by 90% of the population.) I love the blank looks at the GEAUX on my back windshield.

9 of the other 10% here is Yankees or people we consider Yankees-- California, Phoenix, Colorado, wherever-- people who talk funny and dont like Texas. They have no love for the local teams, they're just here because their job transferred them. They'll tell you how much better they do things "back home." If they go to a local stadium, its to entertain a client, or they're the client.

60% of the rest of us are from all over the world or some wierd place. They're good folks, but they're into soccer also, if they have any spare time to watch sports.

98% of the people in Reliant Stadium at Texans games are either "clients" or entertaining clients.

Minute Maid is a nice, trendy place to be too. I wont diss the baseball fans in Houston, because they are so polite.

But the telling fact about Houston is this. The Texans can have a home game, and you can be completely unaware there is an NFL event going on here. Contrast that to New Orleans, where the entire city turns Black & Gold. Every vehicle becomes a rolling party wagon billboard for the Saints. Every underpass a tailgate. Every person in colors. Every woman has some kind of Fleur de Lis jewelry. Every business is selling Saints stuff. You can buy saints gear for your pets.
Traffic builds in the wrong directions before game days, blimps & helicopters hover the Dome, and news casts look like pep rallies.

As sports towns, Houston isnt in New Orleans time zone. Its not even in the same dimension of space. Sad it is. I am one of 4 remaining American children born in Houston. The other 3 are elderly folks in Heights. (our Garden District) I dont know this city any more. It has lost its soul. The good news is you can drive 30 minutes east, and reunite with Texans and Cajuns, and people you know.

The other good news is Houston has thousands of Who Dats. And when we see each other, we go nuts. There have been legions of Saints faithful here before The Storm. Oil biz, proximity, etc. I estimate the Saints crowd Saturday at Woodrows, which this time took both the upstairs AND downstairs at 250. Thats one sportsbar for a game that was on tv locally. If you attended the preseason game vs. the Texans in August your eyeballs melted from the heat, and you also owned Reliant stadium along with the rest of us.

I think we outnumber Cowboys fans here. I know we outnumber hardcore Texans fans.

Local media and sports outfitters here are completely ignorant of these facts.

I have to agree with Mike.

I, for whatever reason, can't latch on to a local sports team.

Since I'm from Covington, La, of course Saints are my football team. But the Texans you think would at least come in second. Nope.

I can't watch the Rockets or Basketball in general. When I first arrived here I was always pulling for the Jazz even though they were Utah. Malone and Stockton were fun to watch.

I like going to an Astros game every now and then but I have no bond with them. I've been here in Houston now for 14-15 years.

There is something about being a TRUE saints fan that once it gets in your blood you have it for life. No other team can replicate it. Maybe Green Bay. But now that Farvre is gone we will have to see how long those fans last.

Houston is a great City with just about any venu(resturants, shows, music, clubs, sports) that you could ask for but for some reason has no Identity of it's own. A big metropolis that somewhere along the way lost it's soul, if it had one.

Houston has been good to me but I have no bond with this city.

Anyway Mike, look at the Rant you created.

Houston is a fine city with some of the nicest people in the world..It broke their heart when they lost the Oilers.. they had a team back in the beginning of the AFL that won two championships ..People would sit thru hurricanes for those games. literally..{KARLA}.I dont know why it gets a bad rap..ive been to every major city in america and Houston is right up there with the best...I like the Astros and i have a lot of friends in Louisiana that do as well..i guess because of the geographical location...Dont forget as well that Houston opened its arms to Katrina evacuees and never blinked an eye...sorry its the Texan coming out of me...But im a lucky guy because i was born in Texas and raised in Louisiana..just like Gatemouth Brown...my mother is a Fontenot from Ville Platte so i know both cultures and love both states ..so i am really lucky...lol:D

Yeah, I mean, I dont dislike the Texans, they're just not the Oilers, much less the Saints where my heart really is.

I grew up with the Astros, but I dont know, I like them, really, but its just not the same since they left the Astrodome. The Rockets are great, really, but I have no interest in BB, until football is over, and my sports budget pretty much all funnels to New Orleans.

Yes, it had one 20 years ago. It has become an international city, and it actually is highly cultural, and all that crap. It just isnt Houston anymore. Its become like every other major city in the world.

I know, isnt it groovy? You know, when I have something on my mind...

The opinions expressed by me are not necessarily those of staff, management, or any living person.

yeah, I was raised in SE TX, which is basically like being raised in Crowley or Rayne or Eunice-- Everyone has a neighbor, a friend, and/or a spouse from Louisiana. Everyone from my home has a gumbo recipe, and is very familiar with the Cajun culture. We hunt, fish, trap crawfish, work for oil outfits, grow rice, dodge hurricanes and mosquitos... sound familiar?

I'm not really Hating on Houston, and I love Texas! I was just comparing city Souls. I was very proud of Houston taking in the Katrina victims. Houston has been my home for 15 years. This city is so Diverse that maybe that's it's identity and I just can't pick up on it. Offers so much to everyone that it has no self identity if that makes any sense. Maybe after the Oilers left town Houston lost something that it hasn't gotton back.
