Orleans Saints film study: Crowd noise played key role vs. Minnesota Vikings

The New Orleans Saints fought all season to gain the No. 1 seed and accompanying home-field advantage in the NFC playoffs. It paid off in a major way for the Saints in their 31-28 overtime victory against the Vikings in the NFC championship game Sunday.

The fumbled exchange between him and quarterback Brett Favre seemed the result of the noise in the Superdome causing Peterson to not hear the snap count.The crowd not only willed the exhausted Saints to victory down the stretch, but it also played a key -- perhaps overlooked -- role in one of the biggest plays of the game.

Its noise appeared to disrupt the Vikings offense just enough to cause a critical fumble and prevent a potential Minnesota touchdown just before halftime

According to the League for Hard of Hearing, here are points of reference measured in decibels:

0 dB: The softest sound a person can hear with normal hearing
10 dB: normal breathing
20 dB: whispering at 5 feet
30 dB: soft whisper
40 dB: quiet residential area
50 dB: rainfall
60 dB: normal conversation
85 dB: heavy traffic, noisy restaurant
90 dB: power lawnmower
100 dB: factory machinery
110 dB: rock concert, shouting in ear
120 dB: thunder

Decibel Levels: Noise At “NFC Championship Saints vs Vikings” is 102 decibels

Apparently 102 was the decibel level in the dome.

This had to have been before we won the game. I expect it was much louder after Hartley's FG kick.

Ha- mean either.

However, I thought the Vikings handed the noise well- 2 long drives to start the game, ZERO false starts, and only one TO called early.
Maybe the fumble in the first as mentioned, but overall they seemed okay.

Yeah, I think that was the decibel level around kickoff. I guarantee it was a lot louder on the Hartley kick.

12 men in a huddle mistake is an example.... Maybe the noise had ill effects that eventually wore down their capacity for clear thought.

It gets really overwhelming being in loud noise constantly when you are under the gun and have pressure on you.

Think of the most pressure filled scenario at your job and now imagine a harley davidson worth of noise in your ear CONSTANTLY.

Not a pretty picture, is it.

The 12 man deserves a game ball.
