New Orleans Saints: Despite obstacles, repeat is possible

By Ed Daniels - I remember the conversation vividly. LSU football coach Les Miles was watching the LSU baseball team celebrate a College World Series title in Omaha.

I asked Miles what was Paul Mainieri thinking about? He said, “Winning the next one.”

So, soon?

“Yes, said Miles, “I guarantee it.”

So, it was no surprise Tuesday night at the Saints victory parade when Saints coach Sean Payton at Gallier Hall said, “See you next year.”

And it can happen next year.

In the past 21 years in the NFL, 4 franchises have had repeats. The 49ers, Cowboys, Broncos and Patriots all won back-to-back Super Bowl titles.

All four had this in common: Elite play from the quarterback position.

So, yes it can happen again next year. But, I think it is very unlikely.

Several factors prevent clubs from winning consecutive titles...

TWO DAT!!!

Our core group of players is very young, and we only have a few key free agents to re-sign.

We're going into 2010 stronger than ever.

I think this team has a legitimate shot. This team thrived on being confident. Now, I think they are more confident than ever and know what it takes to get there.

One other thing the Saints have going for them: the team has playoff experience. And, this experience includes close game wins; and our place kicker has experience, and has proven that he can get it done.

This cannot be overestimated.

Hartley impressed the blazes out of me in the NFCCG and the Superbowl.

Also, just like any other NFL team the Saints will have their injured players back next season. I like the Saints chances.

Even Peon Sanders says we'll be back - if Farve retires!

Seriously, this team can certainly do it again.

If we can have a little more luck on the injury front and have our starting corners on the field for the entire season, I think we are a middle of the pack defense statistically. I also think having Heath Evans back will make the offense even more potent.

Without filling in any names, we could let a couple of guys go on defense and upgrade those postions to get more pressure on the QB and better run defense.

If we can do that (have Greer and Porter healthy), make a couple of defensive upgrades, keep Gregg Williams, and maintain the status quo on offense, this team should be playing in February again.

The one thing I like about our teams chances maybe not repeating next year but real soon is that yes they are a young group but also that D isn't nearly where Greg Williams wants it to be. Its like we are just getting started. We just have to balance upgrading each unit despite some major upgrades on D.
