Payton's Playcalling

This is a great example why I hate others who bash his play calling. How do you make that AMBUSH call. Not only that but he planned it at least a week before. His mind works like no other and you have to cut him slack for the plays that "don't work". You have to think outside the box. Yeah not everyone is going to work out but to have the balls to make a call like that.

I head them say last night that this call will live in Super Bowl Folklore for years.

Agreed, but i admit to anger when he goes back to plays that hardly ever work. Like double reverse or even the reverse. he seems to cal it on aggressive defensives hoping they over pursue, but they never do it seems. the other stuff i can live with.

I've seen his reverses burn teams. You have too.

I've never coached a team to the Super Bowl. I trust our Coach.

Payton is in the .01 percent of Americans that would have had the Balls to make a call like that in the Super Bowl.

Re: Payton's Playcalling

I have to admit to being frustrated with some of his play calling. But as Choupique said I've never coached a winning Superbowl team. I was even upset that he went deep on the first and two and then we had to punt. I told a friend of mine from out of state that he would kick the on sides kick because that is how Payton thinks. That was just Payton being Payton.

Maybe .... but if he calls one more reverse ... or double reverse ... or triple reverse, maybe where Strief ends up running the ball, I'll scream!

I kept yellling "THAT WAS STUPID" until we came up with it, then it was the right call. LOL

paytons aggressive calls have resulted in more good outcomes than bad, guess its one of the many reasons we have been the number 1 offense for 3 out 4 years

Funny, I was screaming to get the ball.

I thought it was a brilliant chess move. Checkmate. Game, set, match.

SP has a computer in his head. Because EXCLUDING DAMN REVERSES he gets the call right. The issue is we don't always execute. But in the SB XLIV, he got the team to execute.

Re: Payton's Playcalling

I'll admit the reverses should be used sparingly and perhaps not at all against a team like the Dolts who are fast to the ball on D.

I still think they belong in the playbook. I trust Sean. He got us here.

You hit the nail squarely on the head. 95% of the times when the play doesn't work it is because of lack of execution. A missed block here or not there fast enough to block a man is usually the case.

Re: Payton's Playcalling

YOU CAN'T QUESTION HIS CALLS...

IF YOU DO YOU ARE SAYING YOU KNOW BETTER...

YOU ARE NOT GOING TO HAVE VERY MUCH SUPPORT BASHING HIS CALLS BECAUSE OF ALL THE CRAZY CALLS HE MAKES... WHO CALLS AMBUSH TO START THE 2ND HALF WHEN YOU ARE ALREADY DOWN??? -SEAN PAYTON.

IN Miami against the Dolphins he called a reverse in the red zone who does that??? The fact that clowns out there thinks its taboo is the very same reason you run it because its the least expected.

I agree, just not in upper case.

Re: Payton's Playcalling

We didn't get one of the Colts defenders blocked on the reverse call and the Colts guy made a great play where Henderson lost 9 yards. Get him blocked next time and I think that play would've gone for positive yards. The major thing is we didn't turn it over.

So if it's 3rd and 8 and Payton decides to go jumbo formation and run a dive play up the middle... you're saying I don't have the right to question what the hell he's thinking? He's human and humans make mistakes. He doesn't walk on water and if he does something pretty stupid, he deserves to be criticized.

Re: Payton's Playcalling

I'm not about to start doubting the coach now.....well except for our first series in the SB....3rd and 2 I probably would have been a little more conservative and just tried to pick up the 1st down. But I guess that's why I was watching it at home and he was calling the plays lol. All joking aside, Payton is a genius.

Re: Payton's Playcalling

You know if the plays work you are a genius if they don't you are an idiot. I for one like the play to win attitude, in contrast to the way Mora coached. Obviously, anyone is fair game to criticizm and I can Monday morning coach as well as the next guy.

If nothing else, the onside kick was an example of what people always say regarding geniuses...they are a heartbeat away from being crazy...or something like that.

I hate the DAMN REVERSES too. Hey he won the Saints a Super Bowl.

Re: Payton's Playcalling

Payton's play calls were great but what really won the game was the players executing. No fumbles, no INT's, few drops, few missed blocks, etc. Payton would say the same thing. That said, getting the players to execute is another part of his job. Either way, he deserves a lot of credit.

I was thinking the same. I love the fact he attacks the defense. But I do hate when we have a lead and he starts calling conservative plays. Keep doing what got us the lead. Keep the pressure on. I understand try to run time off the clock but everyone knows when a team is doing that they are gonna do what, RUN THE BALL.

Sometimes you "burn" a play that is low % just to keep the Defense guessing.
