Reggie Bush could be a targer for the Lions in free agency

Tim Twentyman: NFL Insider - The book is officially closed on the 2009-10 season, so it's time to look ahead.

And what better way to start than with Reggie Bush.

The question is, will the Saints running back, who added a Super Bowl ring to his resume, be back with the champions, considering he will make $8 million next season and his salary cap number will be $13.5 million?

Bush is owed nearly $20 million for the final two years of the six-year, $52.5 million deal he signed with the Saints as the No. 2 pick in 2006.

But consider this: His highest rushing total in four seasons is 565 yards, hardly the production you'd expect from the highest paid running back in the NFL next season.

According to Sports Illustrated, Saints officials could ask Bush to restructure his contract. If he refuses and is released, there are a number of teams that make sense for Bush.

I still think we cut Reggie loose & look at LT from SD. He would be a good fit for us out of the backfield!!

Reggie made great strides this year toward being the kind of back we thought we were getting when we drafted him. He stopped dancing around and started running through and over people. He also gives our opponent's special teams coaches and defensive coordinators a lot of headaches. I say we need to keep him and see if he continues to progress. We certainly don't want Tomlinson.

I think that when Reggie is playing the dynamics on the field change. I'd like to keep him but if he won't restructure then I won't miss him. He did have a good year just not a great one.

Seriously- he is old, and looks like E.S. when he left Dallas. His better years are well behind him. I prefer to pass.

I would like to keep RB, but for much less money. Restructure for sure. No way he is worth that amount. We can find a cat back to do what he does, I think. We shall see though, but I for sure do not want LT

Has this reporter ever heard of Kevin Smith? I don't think the Lions are looking at Reggie Bush.

I say we cut some fans and keep Reggie.

I think Reggie is definitely heading in the right direction play wise. Buy like others have said, he should take a pay cut or make his contract more incentive based. I would love to see him stay, but not as his current salary.

+1 LOL... We keep Reggie no doubt in my mind. He is only 24 years old and adds a huge threat to the offense. Payton loves the guy for a change of pace. Reggie is with the Saints for next year at the least.

If for some crazy insane reason he is let go then this article is useless. Because there would be 31 other teams trying to sign #25.

Kevin smith is a pierre thomas type of guy

not a lot of hype surrounding him since he is the running back for the worst team in the league

however, he gets the job done and is very consistant running behind a pretty terrible line on a very terrible team

reggie would add a great demension to any team because of his ability to do everything but i imagine we keep him here for a lesser salary

many people have this love hate relationship with reggie

i dont have that.....i dont love or hate reggie.....i like reggie enough to keep him around tho

i dont think if we cut reggie we will go out and look for a starting running back.....someone said LT.....thats no going to happen....we have our starting RB and LT seems like hes trying to ***** and moan his way out of san diego

Re: Reggie Bush could be a targer for the Lions in free agency

RB is not an every down back. He's been injured pretty significantly each of his years as a pro. He's probably got 3 more good years in him, so if he restructures now, he'll retire a Saint. Otherwise, his first year of nonproductivity with a new team will find him living off his girlfriend's "famousness" for the rest of his life.

He doesn't have to give up a lot, he just needs to free up some space. He's being paid the HIGHEST RB money and he is, at best, top 30. which would be $2.5 million.

Kevin Faulk is a $3.5 mill/year guy right now and he's your basic benchmark. M. Jones-Drew is a $6.1 million (cap) guy and he's an every down back.

It doesn't matter how much you love RB, he's not productive enough at that position to merit being in the top 10. You could get 4 solid starters for that kind of money. Or two Pro Bowl caliber LB's + a solid scatback.

.. if there's no cap next season, why would anyone care how much Reggie makes?

A writer for the Detroit Free Press thinks Reggie would be a good fit in Detroit

Imagine that.

Yeah. Who cares what he's going to make. We all know the Benson's have an excellent history of paying players, and not letting them go somewhere else. What are we worried about here?

i actually just got off the phone w/ kim k. i used to date her. we actually made a sex-tape. anyways...she told me reggie loves the city, the fans, and the team too much to ever leave. she said, if he needs to, he'll restructure. she also reminded me, that her kitty is all the money he needs. and take it from me, thats the truth!

god, i cant believe i left her for shakira!

Re: Reggie Bush could be a targer for the Lions in free agency

I wouldn't take Reggie at 8 mil, and I wouldn't take LT at any price.

Reggie had a nice year, less dancing but hardly a hard nosed runner or anything more than a change of pace back to create the odd mismatch. If he restructures, great, but if he won't he knows full well he's not a 8 million dollar back so everyone can interpret a lack of interest to restructure as his desire to move on.

Re: Reggie Bush could be a targer for the Lions in free agency

Looks like the salary cap number isn't going to matter, I seriously doubt we will have a new CBA by March 5th. But heres the best part, we only have 2 unrestricted Free agents under the rules of the uncapped season and both are on Defense. We are also in the top 8 and the top 4 of that which means we most likely won't be signing any free agents. We have to lose one to sign one and then the salary must be the same. Only Sharper and one of our LB's, can't remember if its Fujita or Vilma will be unrestricted FA's. Everyone else is under contract. Thank goodness Loomis saw this uncapped year coming and signed everyone. So basically what this means is our team will be intact next year and what help we need will have to come from the draft.
Keep Reggie, hes a playmaker, not an every down RB.

SaintPauly 02-17-2010 01:14 AM

Re: Reggie Bush could be a targer for the Lions in free agency

Fujita is a UFA.

Re: Reggie Bush could be a targer for the Lions in free agency

I'm with TR on this one, and have posted to that effect already. It's not my money.

I think the present Saints are some of the luckiest football players on the planet. Their timing on winning the SB was perfect, as far as the players go. With an uncapped year coming up, I would think that Benson and management would be inclined to give the guys what they want within reason to keep the group together and also as a reward for winning the SB...an opportunity that other SB winning team's GM's didn't have the following year, and, IMO, it is a very big deal if you desire to keep this team intact. JMO, though.

I see Brown gone before Bush. Brown cut would let us to keep both Bush and Scott.

From a purely analytical standpoint one could state that a Lombardi was won without the services of Brown but with the other two...so don't mess with the recipe. I'm with ya on this one, bro.

I'm really not sure of the value of a 300 lb. lineman returning from hip (edited, my bad) surgery, either.

Why does everyone here dislike Kim Kardashian? She's just Reggie's girlfriend, nothing more. It's not like she is a distraction or anything. Reggie actually seems to play better when she's around.

Choupique 02-17-2010 07:43 AM

Re: Reggie Bush could be a targer for the Lions in free agency

I don't care about his personal life, personally. That is none of my business. I don't watch Oprah, either.

Who he pokes is none of any of your business either. Don't be a gossip monger. Don't participate in that nonsense. Unless, of course you are a
part of the Oprah Nation.

I, for one, am not. As you've likely noticed I make a point to say that.
BECAUSE IT IS TRUTH and it seems far too many folks these days pry
into private lives of celebs. Turn your darn TV off, already.

Geaux Reggie. Your privacy is your own, from where I sit.

I just hope that Reggies salary numbers next year, doesn't lose us PT in the process. PT is worth more than Bush IMO.

Re: Reggie Bush could be a targer for the Lions in free agency

Thanks pumpkindriver.

I like Bush. He has made some signifcant plays that helped push the Saints to NFC champs and SB winners.
No, his total running yards are not that high.
I understand about paying him so much based on his years with the Saints, buthe still is very good and has some great worth to the Saints.

However, think about what he must be thinking.
Either resign with the Saints, a SB winning team and one he has been on since his career and get a great deal somewhere else. Maybe a deal with the Saints will not be as good as he could get from another team. If he goes straight for the biggest pay he can get, and who won't blame him for that, but there is a big catch. He could end up at low ranking Detroit or Buffalo or Tamp Bay.
He could end his career at one of these teams instead of ending his career in 2, 3 years from now at the Saints. I hope, I think, the Saints will be a contender for the next 2 years at least. I am not saying they are SB bound . That is ridiculous to even speculate about. I am not saying they are going to be the team of 1980 either. Same goes for the Colts, Patriots, Steelers, etc.

I wouldn't want to be Bush and his agent making this decision.

Bush off the field and his private life, well, he has been charitbale to N.O. HE is involved in the city, giving back. The girlfriend thing, he has been somewhat quiet about that. They do out as any couple at her events. He has slipped in on her show. At least he has not been like Romo was with Jessica Simpson.
TMI-Too much information. Oh geesch, Simpson had married the guy and had 3 kids , at laest in her mind and in any open microphone .
Reggie and KK too have been way more tolerable for the Saints public.

How 'bout we give you one more year to see that he does? j/k...a little

Have you ever noticed that when they show highlights of the Saints...if it's not Drew throwing a strike to one of the receivers, it's Reggie soaring through the air for yet another TD. He's a walking highlight reel, of sorts.

I like that he is not the focus of the offense, because there's Colston, Deverey, Meachem, Moore, Shockey, PT, and Drew, just to name a few, to also get people's attention. It's hard to be a superstar with this roster, and that's just the way I like it...don't you?
