Shefter: Saints won't tag Sharper
Shefter: Saints won't tag Sharper
He just tweeted this confirming an earlier story by Len P. I really want to keep Sharper but I suppose the team feels this wasn't the best way to go about it. He seems to want to stay and I'm guessing they can keep him for less than the franchise amount. |
Re: Shefter: Saints won't tag Sharper
Hopefully they will work something out, but I dont think the tag is needed. I think they want him back, and he wants to be back. They will get something done.

Re: Shefter: Saints won't tag Sharper
Bad news to hear, that would of been the easiest way to bring him back but maybe Loomis can come up with a deal that helps out both sides which keeps Sharper but doesn't break the bank for us even though it is an uncapped year, Saints have alot of guys to sign so we'll see how this plays itself out

Re: Shefter: Saints won't tag Sharper
Well if he signs with another team, then Loomis is going to look like a jackass. You can't let him walk for nothing. You can't give him a three year deal because of his age. Maybe they have a two year deal already worked out under the table. I hope that is the case.

Re: Shefter: Saints won't tag Sharper
We fans need to realize Sharper is a great ball hawk but that's it. He's not worth the 6 mil franchise tag. Not even in an uncapped year. His run support/tackling is under par. I'm not just saying that either, if you watch the games from this year he wiffs on tackles quite often. in the SB Addai made him look silly more than once.
Harper is good at these things, yes, but for Ed Reed/ Troy P money you need to be able to do everything. And that's the kind of money he would get with a franchise tag. |
Re: Shefter: Saints won't tag Sharper
I hope he stays. Hopefully Loomis and Sharper will work something out to keep him for at least one more year.

Re: Shefter: Saints won't tag Sharper
He will play one more year. Bank on it.

If he is worth 6m then bush is worth 8m.

Re: Shefter: Saints won't tag Sharper
I'd say they are worth about the same. $6MM sounds about right for both. About 5% each of what the salary cap would have been.

Re: Shefter: Saints won't tag Sharper
Loomis said tonight that he won't give out his plans on Sharper just yet, so who knows where ESPN got their info.... once again just guessing and seeing what sticks, what's new for them

Source: New Orleans Saints won't place franchise tag on Darren Sharper - ESPN
6 million over three years maybe ... but one year? |
Re: Shefter: Saints won't tag Sharper
The New Orleans Saints will not place their franchise tag on Pro Bowl safety Darren Sharper, a source close to the situation said Monday.
NFC South blog ESPN.com's Pat Yasinskas writes about all things NFC South in his division blog. • Blog network: NFL Nation The Saints have decided to allow Sharper to test the free-agent market, though they will try to re-sign him. The 34-year-old is expected to be the top free-agent safety available. A 13-year veteran, Sharper was essential to the Saints' Super Bowl title. He tied for the most interceptions in the NFL in 2009 (nine) and returned three for touchdowns. ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli initially reported the Saints would not franchise Sharper. If the Saints had franchised Sharper, he would have been assured of making $6.45 million in 2010. Sharper signed a one-year, $1.7 million deal last spring. Agree with Psycho here-- our defensive backfield is getting expensive, and Sharper showed signs of wear and tear LAST year. What can we expect in 2010? I'd love to have him, but with 23 other FA's to worry about, we can't afford anything over $4.5 mill Luckily it's an ESPN story, so it's gotta be at least half wrong. |
