Loomis: Not ready to reveal Saints' plans on Sharper

Although ESPN.com and NFL.com are reporting that the New Orleans Saints will not use the franchise tag on free safety Darren Sharper, Saints GM Mickey Loomis says he's not ready to reveal the Saints' plans for the Pro Bowl free safety.

Sharper, an unrestricted free agent, could pursue offers from other teams if the Saints to not apply the franchise tag to him.

New Orleans Saints GM Mickey Loomis isn't commenting on the reports, and will only say that the team will release details of any arrangement(s) with Sharper when the time is right.

"We know what we're going to do, we're going to keep that information... close to the vest," Loomis told WWL. "I don't like talking about contracts, I think it's a personal issue for players. It's a business issue for our team, but it's a personal issue for our players, and I want to respect that."

Also appearing on "Sportstalk with Bobby Hebert and Deke Bellavia," Sharper commented on his future with the Saints, saying that it's a team he'd very much like to remain a part of.

"The excitement I had, the fun that I had this year, the team that we have, is something I definitely want to come back and be a part of again," Sharper said.

Sharper said, however, that he understands that the NFL is a business.

"And I make no qualms on whatever happens, whether I'm franchised, if I'm not franchised...whatever happens, I know where I want to be. I just hope everything works out and that can happen," Sharper said.

I agree. If Loomis ends up screwing this deal up, and I have to see Sharper in a Falcon's uniform next season, I'm going to puke.

I see this as Loomis gambling that he won't get offered more than 6.8 mil, or whatever the figure is...and has MJ as a hole card.

Only way to see what fair market value is, is to see what is offered up for him. We can always match an offer without having to overpay.

Why in the world would anyone question Micky Loomis? It is sad that people can be negative right after a World Championship

Lets see how this plays out, Loomis isn't going to pay over market value for a player that is entering the end of their career. He is letting Sharper test the market so they can see what a fair number will be, I highly doubt Sharper doesn't came back, just not at 6 mil a year
