Tebucky Jones comes to mind.

Re: Taylor Mays...USC

how can he be compared to Tebucky or considered a bust at this stage?
USC DB's have a pretty good track record in the NFL: Lott, Dennis Smith, Troy P...

if he wasnt such a physical specimen, he wouldnt even be in the discussion of a 1st round pick or have gone to college at usc. what makes him stand out? besides the fact hes a mule and is lightening fast. hes not a big play maker. i dont think he'll ever be any better than a roman harper type player, who by the way was drafted in the 2nd round

CantonLegend 03-02-2010 12:27 PM

lmao 4.43 official

but he is a physical specimen and did go to USC, and is a first round prospect, so what exactly is your point?

and 88 tackles from the safety position makes him stand out

well what im trying to say is really jus my opinion. i dont think he has the football instincts to be a dominate safety. yeah 88 tackles isnt bad, opposed to 53 tackles the year before. but 2 ints in his last 3 season and only 1 forced fumble in 4 years of college isnt too impressive either. jus hold off on the r. lott/polamalu talk

biloxi-indian 03-02-2010 12:46 PM

Re: Taylor Mays...USC

He is a bust unless he is drafted and signed by the Saints. Then he is a "beast"! LOLOLOLOLOL

But then again, I remember comments re; Meachem...once drafted by the Saints and now fast foward.

Mathius is correct. 2 INTS in 3 seasons, NO THANKS!! Better prospects out there with better FOOTBALL instincts.

Lacking ball skills?

CantonLegend 03-02-2010 01:02 PM

Re: Taylor Mays...USC

he caught every ball thrown at him except 1 at the combine today

hes fast....he hits hard.....and hes tall

the reason people dont think hes good is because he has only 3 INTs? lmao

why dont we jus sign jevon kearse and put him at safety. hes pretty much the same person as mays but just older. :nuts:and neither have ball hawking skills

lol pretty much

i know most people dont like mays....i like his athleticism. plus hes only 22 and he is playing with a lot of raw skills

he can be coached up IMO but i know very little about DBs so im not exactly sure how raw he is

Re: Taylor Mays...USC

That 40 time sounds about right. I almost fell off my chair when they posted that 4.24 number. That's Deoin Sanders fast, and he should be put on the corner. I am actually torn on Mays. His Senior season really was not up to what I thought it would be and the first player that comes to mind is Dallas' old safety Roy Williams. I just don't think he can cover the deep ball, so he'd have to go to a team like the Saints where we have two elite corners that can protect him and let him roam the middle of the field ala Roman Harper. Let's just say he's no Eric Berry, but still a first round pick as he is an absolute thumper against the run.

ScottF 03-02-2010 03:46 PM

Re: Taylor Mays...USC

the point is moot since he will be gone 20 picks before we select, but I'll ask anyway
you guys are saying you would NOT want Mays in our defensive backfield?

stockman311 03-02-2010 03:50 PM

Re: Taylor Mays...USC

He won't be gone twenty picks before us. More than likely he goes to a team in the late teens early twenties. Probably 10 picks before us. But I get your point. He won't be around. I think the main point is that we don't need him. We just tendered Roman Harper as at a 1st round pick level so we must think pretty highly of him. I'd say he and Mays are very similar in playing style and Harper has a Superbowl ring.

true dat

mays' senior season seems to have hurt his stock but the fact that he is just a freak athlete will catch someones eye

mays may be a lot like roy williams in the end but im not a fan of comparing future players to current players because you have an idea of what the current player is and you really dont know what the future player is going to be like until he actually gets in the league....that goes for talented players and weaker players

He sucks against the pass! We have a run thumper in Harper. We need a pass coverage safety. Sharper is a ball hawk. You see what he did for us this year. You will have to beat the Saints passing so it only makes sense to draft a great pass catcher. I like Chad Jones and Berry.

stockman311 03-02-2010 04:35 PM

Re: Taylor Mays...USC

We are all set at Safety guys. Really. Harper, Sharper (I still think he comes back), Malcolm Jenkins (our free safety this year or next) Usama Young, Chip Vaughn, Chris Reis (ST hawk). You don't need more than 6 safeties guys.
You really don't need more than 5.

everybody always forgets about chip vaughn

also stanley arnoux could possibly play safety as well so we got our safeties of the future unless sharper leaves then we might have to scramble for a starter

If Sharper leaves, Jenkins starts at Safety. At that point I'd be interested in another CB in round 2-4 for depth and to push Gay for playing time.

Taylor Mays-----4.43 acording to NFL network

stockman311 03-02-2010 05:19 PM

Re: Taylor Mays...USC

Like I said we got our FS of the future in the first round of last years draft. Mays=Harper. It's not happenin fellas.
If the pick isn't 4-3 DE, 4-3 DT, or 4-3 OLB in round 1, I will eat my own shorts.

stockman311 03-02-2010 05:24 PM

Re: Taylor Mays...USC

By the way Mays led ALL DB's in the 40 yard dash. I'm not sure if that says something about him or more about the lack of talent at CB and Safety in this draft.

6 WR had equal or better times in the 40 than Mays.

NFL.com has usama young as our next FS

im not sure the secondary needs to be addressed

like you said tho......if sharper goes then somehow or another we have to find someone. either a corner to replace jenkins or a safety to replace sharper

cuz he is a safety

Re: Taylor Mays...USC

I know he's not a safety, but does anyone remember Kelley Washington, out of Tennessee? Had an awesome combine, was predicted by ESPN the Magazine to be the best player in that draft..... Where is he now? Bengals drafted him, and he never amounted to squat. Alot of "athletes", working at Foot Locker.
