Darren Sharper getting interest from other teams; Saints re-sign one of their own; Boldin traded

Safety Darren Sharper was told last year that he was "too old" to produce well enough and stay on a part of the Minnesota Vikings. He then joined the Saints and snagged 9 interceptions, returned 3 for touchdowns, and helped them win Super Bowl XLIV.

Signed only to a one-year contract, Sharper became an unrestricted free agent at season's end and was not franchise tagged by the team. He wasn't even offered anything yet so now other teams are looking to see if the old man still has it.

No visits have been scheduled yet for Sharper to visit other teams, but rumors are swirling that there is interest out there.

Yes, come on Loomis. I know you're busy getting Jahri locked down; but lets get Darren Sharper done too!

What the hell is wrong with the front office. Why would you let a guy even shop around after the performance he put on last year. Re-sign him already!!! Damn!

They are talking about the bears being competitive lmao. They can sighn all the players they want without a qb they will go nowhere.

In other Saints' news, the team did re-sign safety Pierson Proleau to a one-year deal. Proleau played in all 16 games last season, but still was only used sparingly. His numbers last year were modest but decent with 29 tackles and 1 pass defended.

Oh yeah he had a big year.

Arizona, if Warner retires, won't win 8 games next year.

Do you guys realize we play the NFC West this year?

Rams- Re-building
Seattle- Re-building
Arizonan- Falling apart
49ers- Should be a solid 9 or 10 win team

The NFC North, which is improving exponentially, gets to hammer on the NFC East, keeping competitive balance...

We also play the AFC North I believe
Cleveland - Re-building
Pittsburgh - Re-grouping
Cincy - Pretty tough
Baltimore - Toughest team on our schedule

Even if we slip a bit, we should be a lock for 10 wins at an absolute minimum.

I actually see this as a smart move if the Saints don't bring back Sharper. He knows GW's system and can be an on-the-field mentor to Jenkins (if he's converted), Young, or Vaughn at the safety position. It would suck to lose Sharper, but it will be good to have a seasoned vet in the system to pass on some knowledge.

No [explitive]! This is ridiculous! Loomis needs to stop dragging his feet already!

I've already made cupcakes! Give Sharper a deal!

From what I heard, we've told Sharper what we'll pay him. Apparently it wasn't to his liking so we told him to see whats out there and get back to us.

Smart move IMO.

No one knows better than Gregg Williams if Sharper is worth what he's asking for, or if he's simply an above average player benefitting from the aggressive defenses GW calls.

On this, I truly trust the FO.

+1

Loomis has stated that he won't overpay anyone due to Championship Euphoria. Saints made an offer and Sharper's agent admitted that it is "very fair". He wants to come back and it will probably take a significantly larger offer to get him to sign elsewhere.

The Saints are in a position that we have seen other teams benefit from over the years. We as fans are just not acclimated to it. This has to be an attractive team to sign with right now. This is probably THE most stable and professional organization in the league right now. Players are happy. Good character is demanded of all (bye Charles Grant) and players who have that want to be around like-minded teamates. I don't see many rosters filled with "Me First" players winning The Bowl.

No rush here. I too am impatient but I am realistic in my expectations. The Saints got to this position by being smart and PATIENT! This all started in '06. It took 4 yrs to build a World Championship team (God! I love typing that!). Loomis and Payton are responsible for that. I trust them to MAINTAIN a Dynasty. It aint broke so.......

IMO I wouldn't get too wrapped around the axle about Sharper. I believe in my heart he will be in the Black and Gold next year. Chances are there are things going on behind the scenes we will probably never hear about. The thing that concerns me is, he signed a one year deal with us. How many times have we seen guys play out of their minds in a contract year, get the big bucks and fall off. We have to consider his age in all this. If he were younger we probably slap the tag on him. I think it's a smart move by the FO in that we will probably resign him for less than if we had tagged him but at a fair price to him and us and if he does in fact start showing his age then maybe we don't lose as much. Just my opinion.

nfl network is reporting that sharper will remain a saint in 2010 the saints have offered him a top salary at that position and other teams that are interested will not go over by much and sharper will return as a saint because of the stability in the staff and in the organization.

Uhh -Why cupcakes??

Where the hell is Chicago getting all of this money?? BUT I agree that without a QB & a better O-line they are not going far.

Re: Darren Sharper getting interest from other teams; Saints re-sign one of their own; Boldin traded

Well, look at it like this. Sharper is a great safety, but he's 34 and has been known to shine in his first year with a new team and then go to crap. I don't think this is the case here, but the front office isn't going to give him a ton of money or a long term deal at his age. It's really on him, not the front office. They'll offer him a fair deal and if HE decides to leave, it's on him. If we can shore up our front seven they'll make up for a decent safety in the secondary, in place of Sharper. Having said that, I want to keep him too, but we'll live if he leaves.

I'm not so sure if that statement is true, Danno. I'm pretty sure that there is one Elisha Nelson Manning praying that the Saints re-sign Sharper and he doesn't find his way into the NFC East. As a matter of fact...(oh, I'm sorry , Danno, I know you don't like dots...but I can't help myself) anyway, they probably should check with Eli and see if he might be willing to throw some money into the pot to keep him in NO.

I think Eli is probably praying that Gregg Williams stays in New Orleans quite a bit more than wanting Darren Sharper to... There was very little interest in Sahrper last season...In fact I think he was our fall back plan... And I do think Gregg Williams knows more than we do... and Sharper didn't look so hot when Greer and/or Porter were out...and he can't tackle very well at all.:D

I'd have to agree.

That front office and coaching staff did just win us a Super Bowl, last I checked.

I like Sharper. I hope he stays.

Pierson Proleau is pretty darn good too.

One thing is proven, season after season. There is no loyalty in
the NFL. It is a business first and foremost, not a friendship.

I've never had or needed an agent, so I'm shooting from the hip. His 10% has to be a great motivating factor in the expert advice he gives his clients. If Sharper wants to stay, and the offer is a good offer: should be the end of the story. Sharper is very comfortable sitting in the cut in Greg Williams' defense. Not many other places he could go and do what we position him to do week in and week out (ala Reggie). I've seen Sharper "late" and trying to run a youngster down after the fact: looked a lot like McKenzie. He fits our schemes well and his instincts were of great value this year. Even though money makes the monkey dance, it can also ruin a good thing. I hope he doesn't get convinced to go elsewhere and end up in a place that doesn't polish his accomplishments this late in his career. At some point money has to take a back seat. Sounds real good when its not MY money.

I am a firm believer in the idea, that IF you perform well, then you deserve a certain amount of accolades. Sharper DID his job. Did he make mistakes? Yes, he did, but he made more plays, than he missed. That alone, warrants an amount of respect, when it comes to resigning. We're not talking about a guy who got burned in the superbowl for a touchdown. (Osama Young) We're not talking about a guy who gave up a sack, for a fumble, that lost us the game against the Cowboys. (Bushrod) Unless I've missed something in the games this year, I didn't see many mistakes by Sharper. He played his heart out, and made plays, when we needed them most. I'm not saying break the bank to thank him, but you certainly don't tell him, "Go ahead and see what else you can get somewhere else." When I go to buy a car, or any other major purchase, that statement alone, makes me WANT to buy it somewhere else, because that's the salesman, being a cocky sob, that is basically telling me, "I don't care if you buy from me or not."

Telling Sharper, to test the free agency, TO ME, seemed like a complete snub from the powers that be, basically saying the same exact thing.

With that said, I understand that these guys know more about what they are doing than I do, so whatever will be, will be. But we as fans, cannot get butt hurt, when our star players have no loyalty to the organization, and leave, when it's obvious, that the organization has no loyalty towards them. Many players have left, and done great things, and many of us hate them for it. But right now, you are getting a taste, of WHY these guys have no loyalty anymore.

Everyone on this planet has an idea of what they think they are worth, no matter what they do for a living, and having some "expert", tell you that you are not, doesn't, and SHOULDN'T change that belief.

I hate to see Sharper leave if he does, but if he does, after all of this, I won't hate him, or smack talk him, because I can understand why he did.
