Running the numbers on a possible lockout in 2011
 

From my recent readings, it appears that the NFL Owners and Players are roughly $1 Billion dollars apart on what each thinks the other should have.
Given that are roughly 2,000 active NFL players in any given year, that equates to about $500,000 per player.

The point I'm making is that if you were an owner and would be able to keep an additional $32,500,000 per year, aren't you going to fight a lot harder for that money than a player who is going to give up $500,000?

I guess that depends on what kind of player you are. If you're Peyton Manning and get a gazillion bucks both from your contract and also endorsments you might not care a whole lot. But if you're on vetran minimum or rookie minimum salary then 500,000 is a whole lot. The average length of an NFL career is about 2 years if I remember correctly. That means most guys don't make a whole lot of money at all.

Right, which means the players are going to be very divided on this and the owners are going to be more united.

My personal feeling is that the owners are going to break the union in short order. We will have a lockout next March, followed by a Draft next April, then nothing for months. No minicamps, no training camps, and in the 11th hour the players will cave and we will see games. Just my guess.

1 billion, dang I didn't realize the divide was that great. Might wanna prepare for a delayed season in 2011, they won't strike too long because of the mammoth TV revenue the league will be losing.

There wouldn't be a strike. It'll be a lockout.

Both the owners and the "union" are trying really hard to kill the proverbial goose that lays the gold eggs.

The players have to understand it is the owners who make it possible for them to do what they do and make millions, and the owners need to understand people go to the stadiums and turn on the tv to watch the players play, and not the owners own.

That said, I can guarantee you there'd be a new CBA by now if it weren't for Jerry Jones.

That's a pretty good guess. Both sides are going to lose a ton if the impass becomes extended. Players blink first.
