NEW ORLEANS – Running back Justin Fargas could possibly be the Saints first offseason acquisition.

The eighth-year pro was in New Orleans on Tuesday night, eating dinner with Saints officials at Emeril’s in the Warehouse District, a source confirmed to Eyewitness Sports.

The visit could be tied into whether the team decides to match the Philadelphia Eagles’ contract offer with Mike Bell, which was signed Tuesday. It was Bell’s second visit this offseason after the Saints tendered the running back at the lowest possible compensation.

New Orleans has seven days to match the Eagles’ offer sheet.

In seven seasons with the Oakland Raiders, Fargas rushed for 3,369 yards and 10 touchdowns on 827 carries. He fumbled 10 times, losing only four.

But Fargas missed the final two games of the 2009 season with a knee injury and the Raiders cut ties with him this offseason, citing his inability to pass a physical.

Fargas, though, disputes that and he has taken visits with the Browns and Eagles so far during the free agency period.

Mike Bell has been signed to an offer sheet by the Philadelphia Eagles and the Saints have seven days to match it or let him go. That hasn't stopped them though from already looking for a possible replacement.

Former Oakland Raider running back Justin Fargas was seen on Tuesday night having dinner with Saints' officials. No official visit has been reported as of yet. Witnesses spotted them at Emeril's in the Warehouse District.

I actually like Fargas. He runs hard every play and behind one of the worst Olines in the NFL. He is slightly older Bell clone in my estimation.

I have always thought that Fargas would have been a superstar back if he wasn't stuck in the Oakland tar pit. This would be a great move if he is healthy.

This makes no sense. He is avg at best. No upgrade from bell and bell has been in the system.

the move makes plenty of sense if we get him cheaper than bell. theres no way you pay the 3rd string RB 2 million.

Agreed WV. We aren't going to sign Bell because there is no way the FO is going to match 1.75 Million for a year. No way. Fargas isn't really an "upgrade", but he could slide into Bell's role.

I like Fargas. I've watched ALOT of Raider games out here, over the past few years, and one thing I will give this guy, he comes to play, every game. Not to mention, playing in the AFC West, against designed run defenses like San Diego, and Denver, he earned every yard he got. I like this idea.

Exactly. Can you imagine the culture in Oakland, and how much more positive the environment would be for him? If he came to play every day in that scenario, well I like it...

It's about the money. We can get the same talent in Fargas, that we have in Bell for cheaper. It's a good move. Hopefully in this year's Superbowl, he'll put the right shoes on! LOL @ Bell

Good insurance in case we lose Bell. Probably a more polished back that we could rely on, rather than bringing in a rookie at that position.

Even though he just turned 30, Fargas still has a lot of tread on the tires. He hasn't really been the feature back for the Raiders. Even in his 1000 yard season, he only started seven games. As others have stated a change of scenery and a MUCH better offensive line could be beneficial for him. He's been accustomed to splitting caries (averaging 13.3 carries per game over the last 4 years), so he would be accustomed that role in New Orleans if he signs. I say pull the trigger.

I agree with all that think he is a equal caliber replacement for Bell and will come much cheaper. Good move if we pull it.

Agreed. But the Saints may look at true FBs just in case Evans gets hurt again. Our running game, especially with Mike Bell, suffered a lot without Evans.

Have we heard any more updates on Fargas? I personally think the guy would be a great addition. He runs really hard and is a little more versatile than Bell.

Since we all are now sailing in uncharted waters, as we have never experienced an offseason following a SB appearance, and obviously following a SB win, I, for one, am having a problem commenting on possible acquisitions. We have won the ultimate trophy...how can you and why would you try to improve on that?

It's a weird feeling, because in the past we always knew we needed to get better...now I feel that we just need to stay better.
