More Rule Changes As A Result Of The Saints

The new overtime rule (AKA, "The Brett Favre Rule") is not the only rule that the NFL changed as a result of a Saints' win. The NFL also voted to institute a rule that states, "If the clock is stopped in the final minute of either half for a replay review, but would not have stopped without the review, officials will run off 10 seconds before resuming play. Either team could take a timeout to void the 10-second runoff."

This rule is a direct result of the Drew Brees touchdown scored 2 seconds before the half, which occurred after a review, that turned the tide in the Miami Dolphins game. Had the rule been in effect at that time, the clock would have ran down and there would have been no touchdown.

Re: More Rule Changes As A Result Of The Saints

I heard that they are also considering a change to the rule that led to the overturn of the Lance Moore two point conversion catch in the Super Bowl. It's as if the NFL has said, "if the Saints can win the Super Bowl, something must be wrong."

Re: More Rule Changes As A Result Of The Saints

What message is the league trying to send out?
That the Saints won because the game was too easy? ?? C'mon man..
I hope this backfire on them and Saints go right back in with all of these rule changes..

It's really as if they thought the game was not meant for Saints to go any further than the playoffs..
They making it seem as if they did something wrong and thats why Saints won so easy.. Rich Mccay hates the Saints and he's the main overseer of these rule changes.. Grrr!!!

Don't they change rules every year though.i think you guys might be taking this a little to far.Didn't the Vikings vote against the overtime rule change and the Saints voted for it.

If they truly institute all these rules that is pathetic. I have never heard of such non-sense, but I'll tell you this- I am loving the fact that we won the SB. It still hasn't got old yet!!

Well ... don't worry guys and gals, we have the league's most potent offense. And it will continue to be in the foreseeable future. Couple DAT with a better defense, those new rules won't matter for TWO DAT!

Either team could take a timeout to void the 10-second runoff

Problem solved.

They're not trying to stick it to us. They just want to make the game safer and "fairer."

On a somewhat related note, the league has considered changing the Super Bowl's alternate name, The Big Show, to The (Brady/Manning/Favre) Show.

So what their telling us is, that the players and the teams will be penalized 10 seconds because the officials are too incompetent to make the correct call the first time? I think thats what I'm reading in this rule. Can anybody clarify that?

I would love it if these rules backfire on them & their darling teams get screwed by these rules (ie NE, Pits, Dall, etc.)

Getting more like No Fleur de Lys, more like.

I am hearing the latest new rule is no more than one of Gold, Black, and White on the uniform.

Re: More Rule Changes As A Result Of The Saints

This is starting to get silly. It's like they are trying to make the game so the losers' feelings don't get hurt. Brett Favre threw an INT...no INT they most likely would have won by a FG. Maybe Adrian McFumbles should hold onto the ball while we're at it.

10 second runoffs...I don't see why this had to come in either. A review is a review. At least a TO will help here (if the team has one). I think there will be a lot less challenges due to coaches trying to hold onto a TO in close games.

Kurt Warner, Brett Favre, and Peyton Manning should all take a ride on the Whaaaaaaambulance with the Vikings fans over at Bungie. I have never heard so much whining in all of my life. It's rediculous.

Yes, but because we did not have a timeout at the end of the half in the Miami game, the clock would have ran out and the touchdown that changed the momentum of the game would have never happened.

I just find it odd that the NFL made two rule changes as a direct result of two games that the Saints won.

Just ask Oakland (Tuck Rule) and Pittsburgh (Coin Flip Slip). These rule changes has done nothing more than expose the NFL for who and what they are. The NATIONAL FLIP-FLOP LEAGUE!!

Feel different?

Oh, no... the refs call a time out because they cannot make a ruling on the field, and run off 10 seconds off the clock? HELL NO!.
Make a call. If you can't make the call, don't penalize either team.

The tuck rule is still the tuck rule. Never was changed.
The coin toss in the Lions-Steelers game had nothing to do with the rules... besides, if there's a team in the 2000s that should be nice to the referees, it is Pittsburgh

I also heard that the NFL is a bunch of whiners who still can't stand that the Saints won the Superbowl. I hope the new rules comeback to bite them in the arse the next time we play that Favre guy and beat the crap out of him again. What losers

idk if brett favre ever whined about it either

i know the media whined about it.....they whined about how we smacked kurt warner too but it wasnt nearly as bad as it was against favre....the golden boy

favre is a tough guy.....hes taken beatings his whole career and gotten back up and played through nearly all of them.....but the media love affair with him is what turned me against him

favre is probly a nice guy(except hes full of himself) and hes probably a good friend(except every conversation is about him)

but i cant stand it when the media covers something day after day and theres no new developments but it still gets shown over and over and over

just like the donovan mcnabb thing now.....they arent going to trade him.....they probably wont trade kolb or vick either....but the media wants to make a story so they'll beat it to a pulp til we all hate donovan mcnabb too

That's my problem with Favre. I respect the guy for everything he's done in his career, but for Christ sakes, he's NOT the only player in the league. The media hype surrounding him is nauseating. Even when he's not in the media, they are talking about him. I think I even heard someone talk about what he was doing on his property in Mississippi last week. Seriously? Can we STOP talking about him for five freaking minutes and give someone else a little deserved attention?

I did like him in "There's Something About Mary" though.

"Brett Favre? What are you doing here?
"I'm in town playing the Dolphins, you dumbass!"

I think we've all done that on our property at one time or another...at least us men folk. The grass outside my bedroom sliding door (which just so happened to be in MS) was about 6 feet tall when I was a kid.

Of course...being that he was in Mississippi...if he has any cows on that property he might have been looking for some 'shrooms!

Re: More Rule Changes As A Result Of The Saints

The problem I have with the 10 second run off is that the team is not the one calling for a challenge in the last 2 minutes it's the replay official in the booth so why should they penalize the teams for an officials' mistake unless they want to allow challenges all the way to the end of the half.

Re: More Rule Changes As A Result Of The Saints

They should call it the
"I can't believe the Saints won the freaking Superbowl Overtime Rule"

That has a certain ring to it.

Look with the high powered offense we have and now with another draft on defense, I welcome any rule change of this sort. Besides, don't both teams have to play by the same rules?

These rule changes don't change the outcome of last season.

Yeah I don't buy into this its The Saints rule crap. They have discussed some of this for some time now. I don't get why they are trying to make this more like college football... oh wait maybe this is a conspiracty to do away with the Super Bowl and just crown a winner based on a Power Poll
