Vilma calls new overtime rule a slight to his team
1 Attachment(s)
Reuters) - New Orleans Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma said on Thursday the NFL's new rules on overtime are a slight to his team, which advanced to the championship game earlier this year under the old rule.
SPORTS The Saints beat the Minnesota Vikings 31-28 in sudden-death overtime of the NFC Championship game after winning the coin toss and nailing a 40-yard field goal on their first drive. "If you read between the lines, we feel like they're saying well, if Minnesota would have had a possession who knows what would have happened," said Vilma, who lives in Miami and was playing in a friendly tennis match with world number two Caroline Wozniacki on Thursday at the Sony Ericsson Open. "We don't appreciate that. I don't appreciate it at all." Starting next season, the team with the first possession in overtime would have to score a touchdown to end the game. But if they only manage a field goal then the opposing team will get a chance to end the game by scoring a touchdown. If both teams score field goals on their first possession, or fail to score, then classic sudden-death rules would come into effect, with the next team to score winning the game. The rule was passed 28-4 by league owners Tuesday. Vilma, a six-year NFL veteran who has played the last two seasons in New Orleans, said the Saints beat the Vikings fairly and that the NFL's rule changes were designed to avoid the situation from occurring again. "Whoever scores wins," he said. "It's up to Minnesota to stop us. They didn't stop us on fourth downs and that's their problem. I just feel like they're slighting us, but it is what it is." After beating the Packers, New Orleans went on to defeat the Indianapolis Colts 31-17 to win their first Super Bowl. (Reporting by Solange Reyner, editing by Frank Pingue) |

I agree with Vilma, this is all about their beloved Farve not making it to the Superbowl. Change the rules all you want to NFL. Guess what, he won't make it to the big game next season either. lol

Re: Vilma calls new overtime rule a slight to his team
Wouldnt it be awesome if the Saints beat Minnesota (with Favre as QB) again in the championship game in the next year or two?
LMAO! i would die laughing and be extremely happy at the same time.. I hope that plays out man.. If that happens i think the NFL may either resort the NFL divisions and move the Vikings into a New Division or conference or the Saints so they can have their dream game and cater to the whiners. |
Re: Vilma calls new overtime rule a slight to his team
I agree with Vilma. It is as if they are trying to say the wrong team went to the Super Bowl and that they are going to try to stop it from happening again.

Re: Vilma calls new overtime rule a slight to his team
I am all for JV speaking his mind, but he is getting barbecued in the blogs-- a lot of you won, so just shut up, and the old favorite, the game was handed to the Saints.
I wonder if the team is feeling any of the deep, deep, hatred that Saints fans now feel for the Vikings the best news was that JV made his comments at a tennis tournament with this Hot Dane: Smashing feature on Caroline Wozniacki | Eastbournetennis.com feature |
Re: Vilma calls new overtime rule a slight to his team
I agree with him but hey they can't change the fact that WE FREAKING WON THE SUPERBOWL. Now watch that same rule work against them this year when we beat the Vikings in the NFC Championship again this year on a 80 yard TD pass to Moore or Henderson after the Vikings kick a field goal in overtime. You know it's going to happen. roflmao

I like Vilma even more now. I did not think that was possible.
He will use this as motivation is my guess. It ain't braggin' when it is truth. Pants on the ground. Saints are glad to oblige. |

The team winning the NFCCG next year must trade their starting QB to Minnesota for Brett Favre...immediately. This rule does not apply if Minnesota were to win the NFCCG. One other noteworthy rule change. All QB's who were born in Kiln, MS, and are over the age of 40 and graduated from USM and have thrown more interceptions in their career than anyone else will be allowed to call for a "mulligan" if they throw a pick. They will only be allowed to use this rule, however, 100 times/game. |

Re: Vilma calls new overtime rule a slight to his team
People who actually believe that the Saints didn't earn this superbowl this year, are COMPLETELY RETARDED. 13 wins in a row to start the season, and NO blow outs in any of the 3 losses. I agree with Vilma, and I'm glad someone is speaking out against it. I'm going to make a bumper sticker that says, "We won, **** you. Geaux Saints!"
It's also a shame that a bunch of whiny sore losers, have to taint one of the greatest moments in NFL history, being Harley's kick. |
Re: Vilma calls new overtime rule a slight to his team
Like all little brats after they get beat wanna cry. Well, do what a good example does to children that whine, let's spank them and make it hurt...........oh wait, we've already done that!!

Re: Vilma calls new overtime rule a slight to his team
