Gotta agree wiv ya, JV is the outspoken leader on D. Many people did not want him when he became available but he has had two consecutive pro bowl worthy seasons. He works well in Greggs system because he understands all different concepts, hey he even set up porters pick of favre by changing the defensive play to zone coverage. He always steps up in game changing fashion, be it a pick or a tackle for a loss!!

Vilma is by far the most irreplaceable next to Brees. You can make a case for any of the O line. But Thomas was out all year last year and the saints won the SB. So, take it from there. Vilma is the cog in the middle of a adequate defense. If the Saints add some run stoppers in the middle of the line, we could see a repeat.

Besides the obvious, Brees and Vilma, losing Will Smith right now would be detrimental. The D-line is so thin cannot afford to lose him. I know he is at times a bit inconsistent, but he did have a very good year.

If you take Brees out of the mix...and then Vilma...it is my opinion that the two players that had the biggest effect and put us over the hump are Sharper and Morstead.

No question other than Brees it's Vilma. Not only for the plays he makes, but for his leadership out there. Without him, who would take charge in the middle of the field? Losing him would completely change the defense. I don't think you can say that about any other single player.
