New Orleans Saints get visit from running back Jamal Lewis
By James Varney, The Times-Picayune Running back Jamal Lewis, who was released by Cleveland in February, visited with the Saints this week, according to team officials. It does not appear the New Orleans Saints have made any formal offer to him. Lewis was the fifth overall pick in the 2000 NFL draft by the Baltimore Ravens, and he was a key piece of the Ravens team that won Super Bowl XXXV. He joined the Browns prior to the 2007 season and rushed for more than 1,000 yards in 2007 and 2008. But his tenure there was marred by his accusing some players of quitting in November 2008 and toward the end of the 2009 season he was placed on injured reserve. Lewis is the second running back the Saints have met with since Mike Bell was offered a contract by the Philadelphia Eagles. Former Raiders tailback Justin Fargas also visited with the Saints. Bell has since signed with the Eagles and Saints Coach Sean Payton indicated in Orlando last week that the Saints might employ some combination of the draft and free agency to replace his carries. At present, the Saints have Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush as their featued backs, with Lynell Hamilton behind them on the depth chart.
