NEW ORLEANS ― Saints defensive back Usama Young will sign his tender, his agent confirmed Wednesday.

The Saints tendered Young at $1.101 million and a third-round status and becomes the second restricted free agent to commit to the Saints on Wednesday. Fellow defensive back Chris Reis signed earlier in the day.

Young will enter his fourth season with the Saints out of Kent State. He has 83 career tackles, 11 passes defensed and three interceptions. In 2009, he played in 12 games, coming through with eight tackles and one interception

This should be Young's year. I hope he can step up.

I only view Usama Young as a solid Special teams player, don't believe hes the future at safety.

Won't get flamed by me. Definitely better at safety than at corner, but not even that good there, either. He's even overshadowed on special teams. Maybe with another full year figuring out the position he may improve, but he has to step up. If not, then I don't see him being back after this season.

Don't forget, Usama's a small school kid who was drafted as a project. He's been developing in our system for three seasons. He may not be a starter yet, but he provides depth.

With you all the way. Young is not a starter in the NFL. The one series he came in during the Super Bowl, he got beaten BAD for a touchdown. And he's not a rookie anymore, he's had a few years in the league, I'm done waiting for him to develop.

That's why he's not being paid starter money. He's signed his tender as a backup/ST player, let's see if he makes it through camp.

I see us drafting another CB this year anyway.

I went to Kent, so I really wanted to see him do well (we lived in the same dorm, 20 years apart).
I just don't think he has the tools. I'm fine with him at $1 mill a year.

He has the tools. He doesn't have the experience.

Well and frankly, when he is on the field he's too inconsistent.

Heck of a ST guy though. That's prob why he's still around... and depth.

Kareem Jackson - CB. Alabama. Round 3-4 Steal.

Re: Usama Young to Sign Tender

When you look at the whole article, we have signed an amazing amount of players this offseason:

Signed
Zach Strief
Usama Young
Jermon Bushrod
Remi Ayodele
Jeff Charleston
Chris Reis
David Thomas
Leigh Torrence
Anthony Hargrove
Jason Kyle
Nick Leckey
Pierson Prioleau
plus Alex Brown

Who's left
Mark Brunell
Dan Campbell Kendrick Clancy
Darnell Dinkins Billy Miller
Darren Sharper Paul Spicer
Marvin Mitchell Pierre Thomas
Roman Harper Lance Moore
Courtney Roby Jammal Brown

The article had Evans as unsigned, but I think he signed his tender and is negotiating for a long term deal.

Bottom line- hopefully the FO has told PT, Sharper, Evans and Moore that they wanted to fill the roster and sign role players, and then work on the stars.

By NFL standards it is not an excessive amount of money. He is not very impressive at times but for what we need him for it is not a bad signing.
