Re: Shawn Merriman
Okay So the Saints drafted a cornerback in Round 1, an offensive tackle in round 2 and a tight end in round 3 (what was the investment in Shockey?!?) and I spend the last two days in the hospital with ESPN blocked by the medical staff...
Just got discharged and I'm going the New Orleans to kick Mickey Loomis and his staff in the knutz... Want to draft a guy at his value spot...fine Trade up and get your guys, you;ve got bullets in Brown and Harper... You trade to get a punter but not a defensive lineman or linebacker?!? I can't wait to see this one play out... |
Re: Shawn Merriman
I agree that getting a OLB or DT would have been nice early on, but I'm guessing at #32 they didn't have a OLB or DT rated high enough to pick there. Also remember last season when we had a few injuries in the defensive backfield that we were signing dudes off the street. This gives us great depth and a lot of young talent. There were years when we had the worst secondary in the NFL, that's far from true now.
The second round pick was a great pick, IMO. Stud LTs are such an important part of a team's success. Protecting Brees should be priority #1 and we helped that. The TE pick I don't really agree with. I think Shockey and Thomas gave us a lot of production from that position last year, plus I believe Miller is coming back this season. Don't really understand taking the TE when we could have used an OLB. Al Woods has a lot of talent. Played at a small high school, never redshirted, got thrown right into the mix of playing in the SEC right away, and got better with time. His senior season was by far his best. I think that he's got a lot of athletic ability, and with some more coaching, could be a good DT for us. |

... well, even though it is my 3rd language, I least I know that English is a proper noun and the "E" should be a capital letter. What's your excuse? ... as for "cheating" (a word that popped into the conversation during Baseball's version of the Red Scare), Football is a violent game. People get hurt when they play the game. I find it hypocritical to ask these men to go out and run faster, hit harder, etc. and not allow them to use whatever they need to heal or to give them the strength to withstand the punishment the game doles out. You may think the average NFL player is "clean", and all that strength and speed comes natural, but the reality is different. There's more to using steroids and other substances than just growing muscles. But if you want to go the Baseball route and describe them as cheaters, be my guest. I'm old now, but being that I've played contact/violent sports since I was 6 years old, I have a very different perspective on using pharmaceuticals to heal the body and to help the body withstand the punishment people demand to see and cheer for. |
Re: Shawn Merriman
That's a sad way to look at it... what about the guys who don't use steroids or HGH? Where's the integrity? There should be a level playing field, and guys who take banned substances deserve what they get (and IMO, should get tougher punishments).
I'm not being naive either, I know that there are other players who use. But this is America, you're innocent until proven guilty. Merriman has been proven guilty. He cheated. He knowingly took STEROIDS (not a miscellaneous banned substance, but STEROIDS). He did it to gain an advantage on other people. |
