The Saints wanted Hughes..

New Orleans Saints still have unfulfilled needs after NFL draft
By Jeff Duncan, The Times-Picayune
April 25, 2010, 6:24AM
With another NFL draft in the bag, it's safe to predict this about the 2010 New Orleans Saints: More shootouts are on the way.

Eliot Kamenitz/The Times-PicayuneMany expected the New Orleans Saints to draft a linebacker to help replace the loss of Scott Fujita. The Saints didn't get much help for their defense during the three-day player lottery. In fact, they added more players to their top-ranked offense than they did to their 25th-ranked defense

It seems that the Colts followed that rule of thumb, because they definitely do not need help at OLB. They grabbed the best available player. I'm wondering if at the same time they were also motivated to take Hughes because he filled an area of need for us.

That's all pretty silly. If the Saints didn't think they have a replacement for Fujita in house do you really think that they wouldn't address that?

C'mon now. I can only assume that Dunbar is the man next year and they are comfortable enough with that.

Dunbar will never be an above average defender in the NFL. He's far too slow and got caught out of position big time last year. I've got my money on Stanley Arnoux.

As it stands right now..Arnoux is our best option site unseen....I agree Dunbar is depth at best. Just think of Hughes in that spot...Damn Colts..lol

so the Colts screwed us out of Hughes, and we screwed the Vlkes

my question is, why didn't we take the next best LB after Hughes instead of a corner?

this article starts off by being wrong

stating our pass rush is our biggest weakness

thats bs.....there isnt anything that says our pass rush is worse than our run defense.......NOT ONE THING

I didn't say that. Just stating that this team is good enough at all areas to take BPA. Hughes probably was one step above Robinson on the Saints board. After he was gone I don't blame the Saints for taking the next highest even though he was a CB. And in fact I think many people mistake the fact that you can have the finest DBs in the land and still use another playmaker there. For instance, Revis and Cromartie then add Kyle Wilson for the Jets.

Arnoux is a MLB and I thought Dunbar showed enough to get a good shot.

Re: The Saints wanted Hughes..

Arnoux played middle in a 3-4 in college, but has the skill to play outside LB. Gregg Williams said the first day of the draft, that he was better on tape than Aaron Curry. The corner back isn't a bad pick, if they know Sharper is leaving for sure. Chip Vaughn was supposedly right under Sharper in the depth chart before he got hurt. There is also the chance Jenkins will move to Safety. Jamal Brown is gonna be traded for a LB or DT. As pissed off as I was with the draft, we might be okay if they make a big trade. If this happens, then I understand the logic.

Read the article. We had Hughes rated at that spot. Colts got him. Let's say your next rated LB is like at 50 or 60 on your board. You're not going to pick him up in the 1st round. That's reaching and you end up paying 1st round money to guy that will probably never earn it. They did it right. Just the nature of picking last and people not working to deal with you.

I didn't like the Robinson pick at first, but after watching the corners come off the board in the 2nd round.....I totally understand it.

As far as why we didn't take a LB when Hughes went off the board, I'd say because there was a big drop off in LB's (talent & athleticism wise) after Hughes.

Loomis mentioned in one of the articles on the Saints webpage that they feel about the LBs this year as the Rbs last year that there are some of the younger guys that are ready to step up and take a large role on the team.

I see your point, but LB was not our only need. If the next LB was #50.
then I would have went with Price from UCLA.
