Let's look at payroll shall we?

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; Wait a minute.... J. Brown was the highest paid player last season, didn't play the entire year, and now he's b!tching, because he wants more money? Which part of this makes sense? Trade him to Oakland. I like Richard Seymour.......

None of it. Brown wasn't the highest paid player. The OP said overpaid. He got all that money and didn't play a down last season.

I guess I have to reiterate that it's not possible to trade a player that is not under contract. Brown has not signed his RFA tender. As of right this second he is not a Saint and is free to sign with any NFL team. The fact that no one has stepped up to the plate to sign him, both because of the large multiyear contract and the compensation to the Saints in picks, should be telling. I think right now all sides are waiting to see if Brown is in fact healthy before making a decision.

Other than the fact that Brown whines, I'm not sure why Saints fans direct all this vitriol towards the guy. He kept Brees blind side clean for years. I'd rather have the occasional holding penalty than to have my all world franchise QB having his clock cleaned. Bushrod needed lots of help last year from the TE and Streif and backs chipping. Brown functioned as a Pro Bowl left tackle that routinely took on the best pass rushers in the league on an island.

Just because the Saints won the SB without Brown doesn't automagically mean the Brown doesn't have value to the team. When healthy he is clearly the best tackle we have on staff. And I think that just routinely dismissing him could end up being a foolish move.

OTOH tackles of that caliber do in fact get paid. Now that's the real issue. With the Saints needing to back up the money truck for both PT23 and Evans, whose value has been clearly demonstrated, is there in fact a third truck for Brown? And getting back to the original point...

Drew Brees is the most underpaid member of the Saints. And no I did not stutter. He should immediately be signed to an extension that pays double what he is making now (which is $10 million IIRC). But Brees is a team guy and understands the reality of being the king of a small market championship team.

So you cannot pay everyone what they are worth. That's the reality. Brown needs to get, and I believe deserves, the money truck 2nd contract (MT2C). Unfortunately, I think it's clear that the Saints have other players that are more deserving of their MT2Cs too. And there isn't enough cash to pay everyone.

So I do believe that Brown will end up leaving. Someone out there needs that type of left tackle and has the cash to satisfy Brown's contract demands. But unlike what seems like most of the Saints nation, I'm not mad with the guy. He has done well for the team. I wish him the best.

Super Bowl Championships: New Orleans Saints:1, Carolina:0, Atlanta Chokers: STILL ZERO

Only Atlanta choked in an unchokable situation... Life is definitely good.

I agree with most of your post SFIAH, except these two parts.

Yes, Brown was a Pro Bowl tackle, but let's not assume that making a Pro Bowl means you're indispensable. Jon Stinchcomb is also a Pro Bowl tackle, not on the left side, but still went to the Pro Bowl, and I'm pretty sure nobody would consider him to be indispensable. Brown had some big holes in his game. Other than the drive-killing penalties, I remember him struggling mightily against what you call "the best pass rushers in the league." And every tackle, for the most part, does. They all need some help against those guys. I remember Brown giving up 3 or 4 sacks against Peppers a few years ago.

And I also think that because the Saints won the Super Bowl without Brown, that his value is clearly diminished. We now have another option at tackle with Charles Brown, and I still think Bushrod is maturing. He gave up only one sack in the playoffs and that was to Dwight Freeney.

Just saying I think it's unconscionable that he would ask for more money now. Terrible timing. We just proved we can win it without him. I'd like to keep him because I'm a big believer in the tenet that you can't have enough depth at tackle, but his actions have irked me.

Didn't Brown give up the least amount of sacks last year because he didn't play last year.Hell I didn't give up any sacks last year either.I need to be paid.

Time for another pimp slapping. Brown has not signed his RFA tender. Brown is not free to sign with any NFL team. He has two choices. Sign his tender and play this year or get traded to another team. Or he won't sign his tender and won't play or get paid anything this year. Get your facts straight before you start reiterating things. That is all.

You are correct. I always confuse the RFA rules with the UFA ones.

Re: Let's look at payroll shall we?

When you look at what other good players have been traded for this year, odds are we aren't going to get any kind of value for J. Brown and we're better off without him. I don't understand why people keep comparing Brown and Bushrod. Yes, we won the Super Bowl with Bushrod. No, it doesn't make him a good player.

Back to the payroll.
Overpaid: Reggie Bush (highest paid RB in the league)
Bobby McCray, Randall Gay, and Scott Shanle
Underpaid: Darren Sharper (should get a long term deal but what the hell does he have to do get a decent salary)
Jahri Evans, Carl Nicks, Pierre Thomas, Jammal Brown, Tracy Porter

If anyone gets traded it should be Bushrod.
Sign John Henderson.
Sign Ciron Black.
