Let's look at payroll shall we?

I'll post the 2010 figures when I get them. Anyone want to take a guess on who the most overpaid and underpaid Saints were last year?

I, for one, was WAY underpaid. No kwan for me. I need an ambassador of kwan and I nominate Breesfan.

Yeah, man, it means love, respect, community… and the dollars too. The package. The kwan.

According to most it doesn't matter, so every player on the team can be grossly overpaid but since we won a Superbowl how dare you suggest anyone is overpaid.

Screw it, pay these guys top money this year and go for a second title. Worry about the salary cap next year, if it even comes back.

Based on the below information and production;

New Orleans Saints' 2009 salary cap breakdown | Jeff Duncan on Saints - NOLA.com

Jammal Brown overpaid (on IR all year) $2.46m
Carl Nicks $385K (although Bushrod was a close 2nd) underpaid

All IMHO.

Sorry to miss all the fun! As you have observed, I enjoy having fun...especially with the grasshopper! lolololool

IMHO it is not a matter of if, but when will J. Brown be traded and for what.

Wait a minute.... J. Brown was the highest paid player last season, didn't play the entire year, and now he's b!tching, because he wants more money? Which part of this makes sense? Trade him to Oakland. I like Richard Seymour....

None of it. Brown wasn't the highest paid player. The OP said overpaid. He got all that money and didn't play a down last season.

I guess I have to reiterate that it's not possible to trade a player that is not under contract. Brown has not signed his RFA tender. As of right this second he is not a Saint and is free to sign with any NFL team. The fact that no one has stepped up to the plate to sign him, both because of the large multiyear contract and the compensation to the Saints in picks, should be telling. I think right now all sides are waiting to see if Brown is in fact healthy before making a decision.

Other than the fact that Brown whines, I'm not sure why Saints fans direct all this vitriol towards the guy. He kept Brees blind side clean for years. I'd rather have the occasional holding penalty than to have my all world franchise QB having his clock cleaned. Bushrod needed lots of help last year from the TE and Streif and backs chipping. Brown functioned as a Pro Bowl left tackle that routinely took on the best pass rushers in the league on an island.

Just because the Saints won the SB without Brown doesn't automagically mean the Brown doesn't have value to the team. When healthy he is clearly the best tackle we have on staff. And I think that just routinely dismissing him could end up being a foolish move.

OTOH tackles of that caliber do in fact get paid. Now that's the real issue. With the Saints needing to back up the money truck for both PT23 and Evans, whose value has been clearly demonstrated, is there in fact a third truck for Brown? And getting back to the original point...

Drew Brees is the most underpaid member of the Saints. And no I did not stutter. He should immediately be signed to an extension that pays double what he is making now (which is $10 million IIRC). But Brees is a team guy and understands the reality of being the king of a small market championship team.

So you cannot pay everyone what they are worth. That's the reality. Brown needs to get, and I believe deserves, the money truck 2nd contract (MT2C). Unfortunately, I think it's clear that the Saints have other players that are more deserving of their MT2Cs too. And there isn't enough cash to pay everyone.

So I do believe that Brown will end up leaving. Someone out there needs that type of left tackle and has the cash to satisfy Brown's contract demands. But unlike what seems like most of the Saints nation, I'm not mad with the guy. He has done well for the team. I wish him the best.

I agree with most of your post SFIAH, except these two parts.

Yes, Brown was a Pro Bowl tackle, but let's not assume that making a Pro Bowl means you're indispensable. Jon Stinchcomb is also a Pro Bowl tackle, not on the left side, but still went to the Pro Bowl, and I'm pretty sure nobody would consider him to be indispensable. Brown had some big holes in his game. Other than the drive-killing penalties, I remember him struggling mightily against what you call "the best pass rushers in the league." And every tackle, for the most part, does. They all need some help against those guys. I remember Brown giving up 3 or 4 sacks against Peppers a few years ago.

And I also think that because the Saints won the Super Bowl without Brown, that his value is clearly diminished. We now have another option at tackle with Charles Brown, and I still think Bushrod is maturing. He gave up only one sack in the playoffs and that was to Dwight Freeney.

Just saying I think it's unconscionable that he would ask for more money now. Terrible timing. We just proved we can win it without him. I'd like to keep him because I'm a big believer in the tenet that you can't have enough depth at tackle, but his actions have irked me.

Re: Let's look at payroll shall we?

When you look at what other good players have been traded for this year, odds are we aren't going to get any kind of value for J. Brown and we're better off without him. I don't understand why people keep comparing Brown and Bushrod. Yes, we won the Super Bowl with Bushrod. No, it doesn't make him a good player.

Back to the payroll.
Overpaid: Reggie Bush (highest paid RB in the league)
Bobby McCray, Randall Gay, and Scott Shanle
Underpaid: Darren Sharper (should get a long term deal but what the hell does he have to do get a decent salary)
Jahri Evans, Carl Nicks, Pierre Thomas, Jammal Brown, Tracy Porter

If anyone gets traded it should be Bushrod.
Sign John Henderson.
Sign Ciron Black.

Time for another pimp slapping. Brown has not signed his RFA tender. Brown is not free to sign with any NFL team. He has two choices. Sign his tender and play this year or get traded to another team. Or he won't sign his tender and won't play or get paid anything this year. Get your facts straight before you start reiterating things. That is all.

Re: Let's look at payroll shall we?

The answer is:

Overpaid
Reginald Bush - $7,089,940 Total Compensation
$12,089,940 Cap Hit

This may be our last season with young Reginald as he is set to make about $9,000,000 and $11,000,000 in 2011.

Underpaid
We have a tie!

Carl Nicks - $389,810 Total Compensation
$429,060 Cap Hit

Pierre Thomas - $465,590 Total Compensation
$467,258 Cap Hit

By the way, these two gentlemen are good examples of why we aren't going to overpay Sharper or trade for Albert Haynesworth. Loomis' bill is coming due on guys lilke Thomas, Nicks, Evans, & Brees.

Just for fun these are Drew's figures:

Base Salary: $4,487,500
Sign Bonus: $5,001,000
Other Bonus: $3,501,000
Total Comp : $12,989,500
Cap Hit: $10,660,400

Drew accounts for about 10% of our total cap and payroll last year. Probably underpaid still, but at $13MM I can't cry too hard for him.

We won the super bowl everyone earned their monies last season EVERYONE!! + why does it matter who makes what Benson and rita cut the checks so just relax and enjoy the championship like you should be doing.

Re: Let's look at payroll shall we?

Because I care about the economics of the game. If you don't then go create a thread called, WOO HOO WE WON THE SUPERBOWL!!!

The NFL is about money. Championship teams fail to repeat in a lot of cases because individuals are unsatisfied with the money they are making and stop working as hard. Go enjoy your Superbowl and I'll be looking into the future.
