Saints could reduce PT's contract offer
The Saints reportedly plan to exercise their right to reduce restricted free agent Pierre Thomas' tender if he doesn't sign by June 15.
Here we go again. Another team is taking a hard-line stance against a player who has done and said all of the right things while severely outplaying his contract. Thomas would stand to lose $1.1 million if he doesn't sign on the dotted line in the next five days. not sure what would happen if he doesnt sign. im also not sure what he thinks he is worth. he had this tender on him for quite some time now and no other team even sniffed at him. |

More negotiation posturing.

Re: Saints could reduce PT's contract offer
What they have offered PT is pretty low-ball. That is fact. Whether you agree with him being worth a low-ball contact or not is opinion. Chester Taylor is an aging back and a true backup and his deal was worth pretty much the same - as a reference.

Re: Saints could reduce PT's contract offer
isnt reggie gettin like 8 mill this season? y'all gotta be kidding if y'all think thomas is gettin anything close to 5-6 mill a year he wants, for a guy who never has a thousand yard season and is part of a 3 rb tandem.. its not goin to happen, pierre is a very solid player but not worth 6 mill a year... this one will get ugly... watch we sign someone else before training camp like a lendale(jonthan sullivan) white before training camp just to make sure we have depth and insurance in case the hold out last past the start of training camp

Re: Saints could reduce PT's contract offer
1st let me say I'm a big PT fan.
2nd I would like to be his agent. I would tell PT we wont take anythin under the average for a starting RB. PT came to this team as an undrafted RB. He picked this team to come to with its 2 1st round RBs and recently drafted RB that the team moved up to draft. He beat out the drafted RB and earned a spot on this team. For fightin his way on this team he earned a low signing bonus and minimum contract. PT has played his way through this contract and earned starting RB money. Ever notice they show the starting lineup before the game and it aint the people that run out for the 1st play. Running Back rankings in NFL for 07,08,&09 Bush #36,42 & 55 PT #70, 40 & 24 I looked up running back averages for the past 3 years in 09 PT had the 6th best average in RBs with over 100 attempts. In 08 Pt had the 5th best average( tied with A Peterson and S Slaton) in over 100 attempts. In 07 PT had the 14th best average in RBs with over 50 attempts. He only had 52 attempts in his rookie year 4th on the depth chart. Career Attempts Avg TDs Fum Total Yards Bush 488 4.0 17 13 1940 PT23 328 5.1 16 2 1670 I know people dont like stats. They like to formulate total time other defense game plans superstar-speed+draft position/our overall scouting report. I know PT is lucky to be in this offense which enables him to succeed. He is the leading rusher in the #1 offense in the league the past 2 years. He also lead the league in having the least amount of plays with negative yards. Reggie is nowhere near that. Same offense 1 RB gains 1.1 more yards per rushing attempt over 3 years. I think PT should at least earn 1/2 of what the STARTER earns. |
Re: Saints could reduce PT's contract offer
Maybe this is why P.T no phone home
Bush was paid an average of $20,739 per rushing yard and $21,438 per receiving yard the past two seasons. In the same span, Thomas earned an average of $513 per rushing yard and $1,275 per receiving yard |

^^ good stuff. I'm all about the Avg. yards per carry and the least plays of negative yards. Those stats don't deceive. Total numbers are subject to how much a player was used or overused vs. their efficiency per play. |

Re: Saints could reduce PT's contract offer
I don't see where 3-4 million a year is out of line.
Is PT the greatest.....no, he's not. Has PT done a great job for this team....IMO, YES. His agent is helping to prolong this; PT fire him and get a real agent. |
Re: Saints could reduce PT's contract offer
I've seen PT do things Reggie cant do. Run the play called follow his blockers and gain 4-5 positive yards.
I would define our starting RB as the RB that carries the ball more often. The last 2 years it was PT. I dont think our starting RB should get paid 1/5 of his backup. I know why PT ran the ball more we were saving Reggie for punt returns. |
Re: Saints could reduce PT's contract offer
Reggie signed for Draft pick money. PT was undrafted and got what he was offered. . We are carrying out the contract with RB and trying to put one together for PT. PT is not going to get lone start star Running Back Money. That is just the way it is for now. If I was him I'd sign for one year and make it a make or break season.

Re: Saints could reduce PT's contract offer
PT doesn't rate Bush money. Bush doesn't rate Bush money. Both contributed equally to the Saints winning a Super Bowl. In an either or situation, I would take Thomas. My guess is he'll either play under the tender or not play at all.

Re: Saints could reduce PT's contract offer
Good for the organization. As I said before he needs to get at least one more year under his belt IMO before we pay him the big bucks. I'm not saying he's not good and made contributions and will be a Saint for a longtime. I'm only saying it's not money time yet!

The only thing that needs to happen is to determine the value. That's the real issue. There are multiple sticking points: 1) PT23 is good, but he isn't a superstar. 2) Bush is a superstar, but look at the numbers. PT23's team need to show the Saints how to build the RB contract for the new millennium. It's going to need extended years, be backloaded, and have enough guaranteed money to make it attractive. The Saints offer of $11 million for 4 years is closer to the truth than Steven Jackson money (which is a pipe dream). Push it one more year, get the annual near $3.5 million, and that's the territory of proper value. 5 years, $16.5 million ought to do it with the Saints loading the extra $5 million on the last 3 years of the contract. Re: Saints could reduce PT's contract offer
Most UDFA's don'troduce like PT. He's more than outplayed his contract and was instrumental in winning a SB. I understand busines(some)lol.....but come on pay the man reasonable money.
