Saints release Bobby McCray

Saints released DE Bobby McCray.

The move seems surprising at first glance because McCray worked with the first-team defense throughout OTA season in the wake of Charles Grant's release, but realistically he was never going to beat out Alex Brown. McCray, 29 before the season, managed just 1.5 sacks in 16 games last year. The Saints will move forward with Brown at left end, likely as an every-down player. McCray's release takes the team off the hook for his $2 million salary.

Jun. 21 - 3:50 pm et

The source was rotoworld and if indeed this is true, more details should come shortly. Given his salary and lack of production, this move does not surprise me one bit. Good luck to him... he got a ring and was paid well during his tenure as a Saint.

Man i really liked bobby aswell, thanks for all your hard work mccray, especially in the playoffs, coaching staff must like what weve got in the new additions of alex brown and jimmy wilkerson

Saints creating room for Brees' deal. That's $3.4MM for Jammal Brown no longer on the books and now another $2MM for McCray we don't owe not either.
I just think the personnel people don't like one dimensional players, which McCray was. I will miss him for the simple fact that he wrecked Favre's ankle in the NFC Champ game. Crucial play.

The Saints also dumped him it seems to avoid the $1.25MM roster bonus he is due in 10 Days.
Saints likely dumped Bobby McCray to avoid $1.25 million roster bonus | ProFootballTalk.com

McCray was evidently shocked by the news.

I'm scratching my head on this one. So much for DE depth, I guess. Maybe some of these younger guys have been impressing the coaching staff.

Wow...talk about the move from out of nowhere!

WTF!! His malicious hits on the QB will be missed. Loomis must be gettin ripped off some killer acid cus first they trade Brown for Washingtons 3rd RD pick that they do not own, now Bobby "The Basher" McCray is released the FO got us a super bowl i trust the judgment (on mccray)

I'm w stockman on this one.

Depth is an issue at the moment though:

Starters: Smith and Brown
Rotation: Charleston and Wilkerson (who may not be ready for the start of the season)
UDFA signings: Galette and Sharpe - both considered undersized for the DE 4-3 position.

The good news is that we still have Hargrove.

We may seem slim here at the moment, but I'm sure Gregg has his eyes on other players.

I'll bet w pick up someone's cast off before camp.

My best guess is if the guy has no chance at starting, then it makes sense to dump his salary. His production did slip tremendously in 2009.

wow, all i can think of is how bad mccray must be feeling thinking he had another year on board. well he'll catch on somewhere, but at a lower price.

Re: Saints release Bobby McCray

not big on weakening our biggest problem....defensive line

mccray was really only valuable on passing downs but he was arguably our best backup and having him in the rotation was crucial to our success down the road against teams like minnesota, arizona, and indy

i could say i trust the coaching staff in their decision making but they really have tried to make a lot of bold moves this offseason and i hope its not going to come back and bite us later this season

With ya there! And I totally agree that DL remains our biggest area of need.

But they must have guys on their radar. No way they don't add two more guys.

seems like all the props the saints have been getting for keeping the super bowl champions intact is un folding a little more.

Re: Saints release Bobby McCray

I'm with you guys on this one ... maybe they know something we don't with the young guys in the fold. But one has to admit we weren't world leaders in terms of number of sacks as a team. If it weren't for the bag of tricks from GW and a now rock solid CB corps, we would not have had the numbers we had last year. I say, let's give them the benefit of the doubt for now.

McCray had the DWI arrest, he's probably been on shaky ground since then.

thats pretty crazy, i didnt see this coming at this point. figured it would be til TC at least. aside from someone pointing out making room for brees' deal, the same could be said for pierre.

Re: Saints release Bobby McCray

WTF is right. Have we signed someone else to replace him that none of this group of know it all's didn't here about? I DON'T FREAKIN THINK SO!
I liked Bobby alot and he wasn't a starter but did provide depth at the position and he wasn't expensive.

Re: Saints release Bobby McCray

come on guys this is for cap space. even without a cap there still is only so much money left at the end of the to sign players. Lets see what we do with the cash then whine

$1.25mm due July 1 is way before training camp starts. Not to mention $2.0mm in 2010 salary for how many snaps? And they signed Wilkerson and Brown.

Last year McCray said he was going to be the starter. He could not beat out Grant! Wow!

Payton has said, it is not how you got here, but what you do while you are here!

Bobby, thanks for the memories and good luck wherever you land.

Re: Saints release Bobby McCray

im starting to think that there is something behind all of this. such as, a violation of team rules or league rules, you dont just up and cut the guy like that...especially at a position that is arguably the thinnest on our team. im betting something comes out in the news soon on this. im still baffled.

so let me get this right... our DEs are Will Smith (solid) and an assortment of other guys that are either hurt, old, nerdy, cant find spots on other teams, or cant get drafted.

papz 06-21-2010 08:27 PM

Re: Saints release Bobby McCray

3.25 million dollars for 12 tackles and 1.5 sacks. If he didn't get those shots on Favre during the playoffs, this shouldn't have shocked anyone. Extra snaps for Hargrove on the outside... which is a win in my book.

Brown is better. Hargrove brings more situationally. Everyone else is cheaper. Gay will probably be next.

I don't agree with this move. I really liked Bobby. But, like QBress said; "in Loomis and Payton I trust."

Best of luck to Bobby in the future and thanks for all you've done.

and don't forget Wilkerson, Gallette and Brown.

Its possible he may not have even made the team.

I appreciate what Bobby did for us last year. I think that Brown and the other DEs will work out.
