ProFootballWeekly.com - Saints will have 'pitch count' for Sharper in training camp

Saints FS Darren Sharper underwent knee surgery earlier this offseason and did not participate fully in OTAs and minicamp as he recovered from the procedure. Head coach Sean Payton discussed how he expects to use Sharper in training camp during a recent interview with PFW.

"I think early on we'll probably have a pitch count with snaps," he said. "... Then, based on how (he's) doing and how (he's) responding, we'll increase the reps."

Payton said that Sharper will be monitored closely during the first two weeks of training camp. Sharper, 34, was re-signed to a one-year deal in May, and it could be awhile before he's ready to participate in every drill. He played a key role in the Saints' Super Bowl run, making nine interceptions and scoring three touchdowns, but this will likely be his final season with the club. New Orleans moved 2009 first-round pick Malcolm Jenkins from cornerback to free safety this offseason, and he's being groomed as Sharper's replacement.

I like that idea, a lot. I also like giving vets a break during 2-a-days.

Have they looked at the calendar? They don't have "awhile". The preseason starts in less than 4 weeks, and the regular season starts in less than 8 weeks.

Depends on how she wants to use it. That gun barrel is hard and could be a little cold.

Oh yea... what else could you do with a injured 34 year old safety. :doh:

The Saints should probably take this approach for the entire season with Sharper. There is no point in having Sharper break down by mid season with Jenkins being available.
