Drew is my Mariano
I've been a Yankee fan since way back when. Growing up in New York City was a great place for a kid like me since sports played such a huge role in my life. And the Yankees were my first life line. My dad would take me to Yankee Stadium to watch the Yanks live, or we'd watch them on TV. And pennant races and October baseball are somethings that still move me. If the Yankees are in it, I'm a little kid again.
In 1995 the Yankees signed Mariano Rivera. He has become the best closer in the history of Major League Baseball. When Rivera was called upon to shut down Yankee opponents in those crucial "I think my head is going to explode" moments, Yankee fans felt something good was going to happen. Mariano Rivera is fearless. He has his own ice maker in his blood. He wraps his arms around pressure and feeds off it. When Rivera takes the mound, putting the ball in his hands is better than any insurance company could do. Drew Brees is my Rivera. While watching the New Orleans Saints play the Chargers this past week it hit me. I watched Brees and felt the same way I do when Rivera pitches. Good stuff is about to happen. Brees is good. Okay, so I could come up with a bunch of words to describe his talent to you, but when dealing with a great talent it's best to just say "That man can play." I'm not telling you something you don't already know. Go look up the stats if you want. I'm just telling you that while watching Brees play, I got that Mariano feeling. Both have won the biggest championships their sports have to offer. These two guys are only half human. They're human off the field and take on some other life form while on it. There are certain ball players that make your goose bumps form a conga line and dance. I plan to dance with Rivera and my Yankees in October. Saints fans are looking to dance again this year. They know it's best to let Brees lead. |
