Can someone grab me some utensils so I can eat my crow?
Thought this was interesting. I always wondered where the phrase came from.
Quote:
What about the expression eating crow, meaning accepting what one had fought against? As one tale has it, that phrase has its origin in a wartime hunting exchange between a trespassing local hunter and an enemy army officer. Supposedly, the local man shot a crow on enemy lands. The soldier first tricked the hunter into handing over his weapon, then forced him at gunpoint to take a bite of his own crow to teach him a lesson.
