3rd and Short
I have been watching the Saints try to impose their will on other teams in short yardage situations, and I'm just besides myself. Two tight ends, and more than 1500 pounds of pure manhood across the front - and that's only counting our side of the ball. Then we wonder why there are no seams or gaps for PT, Reggie, Evans or anyone else to squeeze through to get 1 or 2 yards. Spread the field! PLEASE! We could still run the ball if we wanted to. It would be much easier for PT and the rest to pick their opening (if there is one) or to turn their shoulder past a defender and drive forward to get the yards. Here is the best part: Drew Brees. I would rather have 6 options to pick up the yards as opposed to 2. QB sneak, play action, roll-out and tuck-it, off guard/tackle left or right, button hook, sit down, stop-and-go, quick slant, 5-and-out, and on and on and on. I trust Brees to make that call based on what he sees at the line of scrimage, depending on the coverage. 3rd-and-1 should look no different than 2nd-and-5, IMO. It seems like we are limiting our own success by shrinking the area of coverage. Sustaining drives will help us continue our winning ways.
