I know a lot of New Orleans fans are questioning Sean Payton’s decision to have Garrett Hartley attempt a 29-yard field goal on a first-down play in Sunday’s loss to New Orleans. The mailbag is full of those questions.

You all know what happened. Hartley missed the attempt, the Falcons went down the field and won the game, fans are second-guessing Payton and the Saints worked out veteran kickers John Carney and Kris Brown on Tuesday. Still no word on if they plan to sign either of them.

When Payton decided to kick on first down, my gut reaction was it was the right call. The Saints were tired and needed to put an end to the game. They had put Hartley in position for a chip shot. I didn’t think it was the wrong call.

But, when I started hearing so many critics, I decided to check into the percentages. I reached out to ESPN Stats & Information and asked what history has shown about field goal attempts from 29 yards or less.

The response I got was a survey of all field-goal attempts during the regular season and post season since 2001. On field goals of exactly 29 yards, kickers have made 231 of 255 attempts. That’s 90.6 percent.

On field goal attempts of 29 yards or less, kickers are 2,574 of 2,686. That’s 95.8 percent.

Could Payton have run a couple more plays and gotten a few more yards? Sure. Would it really have mattered? I’m not so sure. He was playing the percentages and the percentages said an NFL kicker should make that field goal more than 90 percent of the time.

Yep he was better when he did the unexpected, i.e. onside kick!

Percentages, perschmentages. I still say it was the wrong call at that time.

SHartley was missing 40% of his kicks. Payton wasn't playing the percentages at all.

I'm not questioning the call. So we run it and fumble. Too many other things went wrong. Hartley is a young kicker. He'll be fine.

Hell throw the ball run the ball just score a TD and win.

I don't care what anyone things of his calls... HE WON A FREAKIN SUPER BOWL COACHING THE SAINTS! How many coaches have done that? How many coaches call an onside kick to start a half... IN A FREAKIN SUPER BOWL I'll never second guess one of his decisions.

At least he addresses a problem when he see's it. Otherwise we'd have a coach sticking with his guy come hell or high water.

We are just along for the ride.

i'm not secondguessing that call as much as i am the calling of the timeout that disallowed our blocked field goal!

i mean, what're the percentages of that ever working, anyways? it's always seemed like a waste of time to me. its as pointless as trying to ice the kicker.

I hate to say that but that was last year.....if we go 2-14 this year would you still be saying that? It's a what have you done for me lately league....and i think He should have ran it a couple of times to center it up for Hartley.

It is not just last year... how about the 42 years before that. How many have come and gone before him.

His brain doesn't work like most coaches are most people...

No one makes the calls he makes and he won a SB. So you have to appreciate his 'madness' if you will and just deal with it or we can have the previous 42 years back.

New Orleans fans shouldn't be thinking about what you've done for me lately? We are 2-1 and the defending World Champion New Orleans Saints. I suggest that everyone read Payton's book Home Team. It gives a lot of insight into the way he thinks.
