The Saints Have Found Continued Success With Depth
The five year span of the Sean Payton era has been without question the most successful span in Saints' history. The last two years, especially, have seen a very high percentage of wins and a Lombardi Trophy. The Saints are 21-6 in the regular season over the last two years, and while that record has been achieved with quality coaching, preparation, and elite players, the depth of the roster is most responsible in my mind for the consistent success. If you asked me what's changed the most in the organization's business model in the last 5 years that's allowed them to be so much better than before, I'd say unequivocally that the improved talent evaluation has been the determining factor.
If you look at most NFL teams, they are built with a fairly proven, or at least promising, starting lineup. Teams either have starters they consider elite, serviceable, or with loads of potential. In the end football is an extremely physical sport, and the question that's always asked is how well a team will be able to absorb injuries. The problem is one never knows going into a season which positions will be most affected by a rash of hurt players. Assigning depth to each position becomes a challenge in finding diamonds in the ruff and it becomes a guessing game. Full article below... Depth has really helped us this season.
With all the talk about Lynell Hamilton being the grind it out/pound em' guy coming in, when he went down i didn't know what RB we were going to turn to - Welcome Chris Ivory When J.Casillas played immense in preseason, literally making plays all over the field it, our D took a big hit in preseason when he went down for the season - Welcome Danny Clark Darren Sharper goes down for a couple of games, GW made a reality what he wanted to do all along - move Jenkins to FS (real bright future as our starter i think) Also we have guys like leigh torrence and Pat Robinson for depth at CB, We are getting all of our RB's finally healthy and our TE's and all healthy now seen as Shockey is back. |
Great article. It really hits home about playing at high levels without your starters. I've been saying our scouting dept. is the best in the business.

Really good article. Thanks WD656! It underscores the thing that we all know and the rest of the nation tries desperately to ignore; When this team is healthy and has the entire play book available, the Saints are virtually unbeatable. Gettin' healthy at the right time. LOOK OUT NFL! |
