this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; If both the team and Brees are in the LEAST bit smart, they would realize that the more they commit to Brees, the less likely it is that the team returns to the Super Bowl. Our squad is virtually depthless ...

If both the team and Brees are in the LEAST bit smart, they would realize that the more they commit to Brees, the less likely it is that the team returns to the Super Bowl. Our squad is virtually depthless except at WR. No team can survive an 18 week season without a lot of quality players. The more Brees takes off the table, the more we'll have a season like the last, decent but not championship. Brees won't make the Hall unless he has 2 rings. He should know that and do whatever it takes to make a serious run.

I'm not against paying him a lot of money, I'm against crippling the team.
1 player on 53 should not get more than 8% of cap per year. You wonder why the Colts and the G-dudes are suffering??? hell, TB nearly made the playoffs with the 3rd lowest total salary, and the chiefs were in with the lowest.

Spend smart guys. Don't take it all off the table.

So what you are saying is you believe that signing Brees to a 100 Million Dollar contract some how hurts the Saints and the money could be used elsewhere to sign other players to better the team. This arguement really doesn't hold water since Brees is the team. Try to imagine the team without him.

If the job pays a 100 Million Dollars, I for one think he's earned it.

If the object is to win a Super bowl, all I need to say is Trent Dilfer. Screw the belief that you need to pay a qb $100 million. You get a lot of well paid talent you'll kick the crap out of one superstar and a bunch of looksquadders. Just look at the 2010 saints.

Yeah, unless you see the Ravens Defense of 2000 laying around anywhere I don't think Dilfer at QB is better than Brees.

Hey look, this is something that the Patriots, Colts, and Chargers are doing and the GB will be doing. This is Brees' value to the team. You can pay him his salary and still contend.

Dilfer was an exception, and was only able to do what he did because he had one of the top three defenses in NFL history on his side.

If you think Drew doesn't deserve the money, just imagine this team with Aaron Brooks at the helm...

And, negative rep for you for making me imagine AB at the helm of this Saints team.

Drew CARRIED the Saints.

The more you consider it, the more obvious it becomes.
The more obvious it becomes, the more stunning it is that we have had the good fortune to have had Drew Brees at the Saints

It really is a no brainer. Drew Brees is the face of the franchise and led us to the Superbowl last year and brought us back into the playoffs without a running game. He is a record setter with value that is off the charts.
However, I believe that he knows that there is more to life than money. He is a team first guy and will be reasonable......but his agent probably doesn't look at it the same way.
Drew is smart and knows he is in an ideal situation here in NO with a great head coach and a strong defense.
