Fix the current Saints

What would you do to fix the current saints and help them get back to the SB in the next two seasons.

- RESIGN DREW BREES!!!!!!

- Release Darren Sharper " Thanks for the memories"!!!!!
- Promote Malcolm Jenkins " Congratulations " Jenk the job is yours!!!!
- New blood on the edges through free agency. Get your pass rush back!!!!
- Draft the tallest, fastest corner you can find.
- Sign Deangelo Williams

- Fire the special teams coach and get a new one
- Get Garrett Hartley's act together or send him packing
- Fire Scott Shanle and upgrade at OLB immediately

Luda34 01-18-2011 02:56 PM

You forgot at least two things I believe get a better left tackle to watch Bress blindside and get a big run stopping D-lineman and we will back at the dance.

Luda34 01-18-2011 02:57 PM

Oh I forgot get rid of Alex Brown sorry a$$.

Danno 01-18-2011 03:03 PM

Upgrades
DE
DT
OLB (both)
RB
KR/PR

That should do it.

dizzle88 01-18-2011 03:05 PM

Lets see what Charles Brown can do, he can play either tackle and we need to upgrade both Bushrod and Stinchcomb, Not sold on Bushrod at all. He can't handle the bull rush and he has not learnt from last year it seems.

Agreed with the sign deangelo williams, the guy is a good RB and will do well in our system.

Speedy Ron 01-18-2011 03:06 PM

hartley hasnt missed since early in the season. im convinced it was a holder problem. i think hes one of the better kickers in the league.

say what you want about our o line but we are in the top when it comes to least sacks allowed. i know its because of brees too but that is still a great stat.

Agree with all of the above, except DeAngelo Williams. Would be better to find the new rookie version of Williams in 2011 draft, from a smaller school with low miles. And draft two of 'em if possible. Although it would be nice to have DeAngelo, I'm worried about the expense.

Also:

- Renegotiate w/ Reggie
- Coach up Junior Gallette and we may not need to worry about adding that many defensive pieces.
- Coach up Chase Daniel and find him some decent competition in training camp.
- Re-evaluate or replace our training/medical staff
- Find a bright young assistant to learn from Sean and help w/ offense (ala Josh McDaniels w/ Patriots)
- Get a promising young RB/WR/PR/KR like KC's McCluster or NE's Woodhead to help out Roby/Reggie
- Reconsider the occasional Wildcat usage (in case we have RB's hurt again or conventional running game struggles).
- Consider the pistol (would be a nice change for running game and Drew can run it in the NFL with his quick release).
- Lobby NFL to increase active roster size, whether or not the 18-game season goes through. That way we could actually use Gallette or other key reserves in games.

Key*-re-evaluate or replace medical staff that couldn't/wouldn't make a dx on Thomas ALL season long. Could have just sent him to Urgent Care and they would have been more accurate.

Lobby NFL to increase active roster size - I like that one! This season showed how much that was needed and not just with our team.

Find some young blood that isn't injury prone, that won't cost us major bucks, but are willing to go that extra mile at all costs. Real men need only apply.

I like DeAngelo too. At first glance hearing DW and Saints in the same breath excites me too but I am not happy having that much money tied up in the RB position.

1) Re-sign Reggie for something that works to his performance/durability or let him walk.
2) Spend a mid-round pick on a project RB.
3) Grab an affordable FA RB option if we cannot return PT, Reggie and Ivory.
4) Draft OLB or DE with our 1st rounder.
5) Get a solid FA OLB and DE even with the draft pick used.
6) Draft or sign more depth to the DT position.

I am content with our o-line as is. I like the depth Strief offers, I look forward to what Charlie Brown can show us. If we start the same 5 I am good with it. I am also content with Hartley. He will rebound and be solid enough for us. I do agree with getting a good return guy. This should not cost us a bundle to do so.

Get me a FB as well and I can sign off on this.

SaintPauly 01-18-2011 06:03 PM

I'm still not sold on Harper at SS. His pass coverage is absolutely dreadful. Run support, he's good, but we need someone that can handle both.

AlaskaSaints 01-18-2011 07:36 PM

Damn right you're not sold on Harper! (Good point) If he sees one more day as a Saint I'll be shocked. I mean, at his age, he's not coachable.

We need a serious running attack. That's the fundamental reason we fell short. Brees is great but no QB is good enough to carry a team with his arm alone. Ditch all these prior injury guys and get a solid SEC back that can handle the hits. I have faith in PT and Ivory just no faith in their ability to stay on the field. Cut all of them and start over. Let them go somewhere else and get injured again.

Speedy Ron 01-18-2011 08:24 PM

this is getting ridiculous. basically people are wanting a whole new team. if harper had a good game vs seattle everyone would be saying how good of a year he had. our o line isnt that bad. stinch and bushrod werent all pros but much better than other options and much better than most teams tackles. our Lbs are garbage, DL needs to up grade and we go back to superbowl. our D gave up 41 pts and it is too hard to out score 41 pts. we didnt even have a rb and we still scored 36 pts. we havent had one all year really so yo can add that to the wish list justifiably. but people are sounding absolutely crazy right now.

jeanpierre 01-18-2011 10:11 PM

We have three weak points on the current Saints Roster:

Running Back - Need a bigger, stronger back, comparable to Deuce, to split the load.

Defensive Line - Low Return on Over-invested Ellis; need a comparable Defensive End now that Will Smith is finally playing to his potential...

Strong Safety - Roman Harper has been exposed over and over and yet some people still don't get it...he can't ball...

MatthewT 01-19-2011 01:13 AM

The Saints do have some glaring weaknesses on their roster. The first thing the Saints should do is get their running game back to where it needs to be. Once that is done, most everything else will fall into place.

As for the training/medical staff, that has been a big question mark for years now. I will say with maybe a handful of exceptions, the injuries did not appear to be conditioning related.

Of course, additional help is still needed on defense. Gregg Williams is doing a heck of a job, but seriously, more talent is needed. I am fine with the secondary, very concerned with the front 7. Even fine with Roman Harper, but some additional help is still needed at safety. Harper is simply not a good cover guy, as is the case with many SS in the league.

He's a 2 time pro-bowler as an alternate. Apparently the coaches and players think he can ball.

this is starting to sound like atlantas melt down on their boards. just relax. as long as we have brees we will be in every game. we havent gotten blown out in years. we cut a few wet farts this year...no big deal. we have injured players coming back that hopefully can play that will make our team better and we have the draft and free agency. EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE ALRIGHT.
im done with this thread

Amen, we could field the exact same team and barring excessive injuries we'd win 11 or 12 games.

You don't fix this team, you simply improve it.

I couldn't agree more. I don't feel at all like an overhaul is needed. We've got a good knife - just need to sharpen it some.

For the most part, we're talking here about peripheral changes to improve the team. We all know that we have great parts to build around like Brees, the OL, Colston, Moore, Graham, Ellis, Will Smith, Vilma, Jenkins, Porter/Greer/Robinson, and for the most part a really good coaching staff.

aquaboogie 01-19-2011 09:55 AM

DT- Run stopper who can attract blockers and free up DEs for pass rushing and allow LBs to make plays.

OLBs- TWO!! New OLBs to make plays.

RB- Need a power back that can stay on the field. I am OK with PT, as a rotational back at the right price. Reggie has been an OVER paid 3rd down back (decoy) for too long, only sign him for a fair price. spend that money on DT, LB, RB Free agents

Special Teams!

O-line did a good job. More balance pass/run is needed to keep the other teams defense respecting the run and not rushing the passer.
Drew Brees is amazing, Help him out with a balanced attack. Also keeps defense fresh.

Resign free agents (LANCE MOORE)!!!

Mickey Loomis is getting his wet stone ready to sharpen our team.
Hmmmm.........that knife may be so sharp someone gets cut.;)
