Jeremy Shockey's release from the New Orleans Saints says much about Jimmy Graham

By Jeff Duncan, The Times-Picayune

The New Orleans Saints' release of Jeremy Shockey says more about what the club thinks of Jimmy Graham than it does about Shockey.

This isn't an indictment of the veteran tight end.

It's the confirmation of a young star.

Graham emerged as a bona fide playmaker in the second half of the season and effectively replaced Shockey in many red-zone and nickel packages down the stretch.

Indeed it does say a lot about Graham. I loved the Saints drafting him from the start. I had a good feeling about the guy and he has done nothing to disprove that.

And the release or signing of Reggie will say a lot about PT.

I don't know if it says anything about Graham or maybe what it says more about Shockey.

He is suppose to get 4.7 million next season and his production has fallen let alone can't seem to stay away from the injury bug. At some point you have to do what is good for the team.

Perhaps clearing a roster sport now for a future draft pick or another FA we could possible bring in.

Sean loves TE's his offense has multiple TE sets but the cost of shockey was going to really take its toll on us next year.

People want to talk about Shockey's injuries but wasnt Jimmy on the bench when the team needed him in Seattle? Be careful what you wish for Loomis

I was so wrong about Shockey and I will miss his fire and intensity. This has truly saddened me.

If we didn't have Jimmy we'd still have Jeremy.

I don't see how you don't miss a 4x All Pro with a second year pro.

Seems like there needs to be an offseason training for "How to Stay Injury Free" during the regular season. Jimmy got hurt in the Tampa game when clearly he shouldn't have been playing since the Panthers couldn't beat their way out of a wet paperbag. Definitely hurt us in the game against Seattle. I, personally, don't want to see Shockey go and I would love to see him back in black and gold next season. He's a much better fit being a Saint! And the Saints need that smarta$$ talk on the sidelines that only Shockey can give.

Be a saint Shockey!

Agreed, but I don't think it's likely based on his comments in a phone interview with ESPN. He wasn't bitter-sounding at all towards the Saints, but it was clear that he believes he is worth every bit of 4 million a year, and I'm pretty sure he'll find a team willing to pay him.
