Saints agree to 5 year deal with Hartley
The New Orleans Saints continued their busy day on Tuesday by coming to an agreement on a five-year deal with kicker Garrett Hartley.
Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting that the Saints have agreed to the deal with Hartley and he is poised to sign it on Wednesday. Hartley was scheduled to be a restricted free agent when free agency began on March 4, but the Saints decided that his inconsistency this season was now a thing of the past. I guess it's a good thing.

I'm suppose to be happy about this, part of me is disappointed with this signing. They give this head case a 5 yr deal and only tender Lance Moore a 1 yr deal wth

I think it's good that we locked up a kicker. We can either take others throw aways(which has failed) or continue to Draft Rookies that will have their lumps starting out. Hartly is no where near awful.

Get rid of Devery and give the money to Lance, problem solved

It's not like he's going anywhere... I don't understand the rush. It's smart business to wait this out a bit.

I knew the Hartley news would stir the pot... I agree with Papz, there is probably a ton of other stuff going on here.
I don't think Lance Moore is going anywhere anytime soon. I think we all forget what it's like to have zero kicker to work with. |

Hartley screwed up in the beginning. Second year kicker. It sucked that we lost the games we did, but he pulled it together as the year progressed. If SP has faith, then who am I to doubt SP? It's not my checkbook afterall and really easy to sit here and say what he should have done. Now don't let me down Hartley!

Five years is a long time. However, contracts aren't worth the paper that they are written on.

Garrett Hartley's new five-year deal with the Saints has a $10.3 million base value, with roughly $3 million guaranteed.
There's another $2.7M in incentives. Hartley has a great leg when his mind is right, but his biggest plus has always been Sean Payton's support. In a dome and high-flying offense, he'll remain an elite fantasy kicker in 2011. And Hartley now has job security, the lack of which made him risky in previous years. |

I for one, am happy to see Hartley back for another 5 years. I have faith he will shake off the second year slump and come back better than ever in 2011.

I actually like Hartley. I think he's a head case, but I think a lot of the kicks that both he and Carney missed, there were LOTS of other things that looked bad about those particular plays, blocking, timing, etc. The whole special teams process on kicks, always looked kinda sloppy, all year, instead of crisp and tight like other teams. And that's coaching. |
