Tom Benson shows Pope his Super Bowl Ring
 

Tom Benson and his wife somehow secured a few minutes with the Pope Benedict XVI recently at his weekly general audience in Rome.

As custom dictates, Benson kissed the Pope’s famous Fisherman Ring. And then Benson offered up a ring of his own.

“I said to him I’d like to show you my ring,” Benson told Bruce Nolan of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, with his wife by his side during the interview. ”I told him what it was, you know? It’s a Super Bowl ring. And he understood that, right, darling?”

The picture is on Nola.com and is pretty priceless.

“There’s this cardinal laughing too. He couldn’t believe I would do that,” Benson said.

We also can’t believe Benson is really going to send Benedict a Saints jersey with “Holy Father” and the number one on the back.

Maybe Benson wants Benedict to solve the team’s short-yardage woes.

Now that would make a nice billboard, and probably cause mass histeria from the Catholic community..."but we're the Saints!"

I wonder if the Pope kissed the ring?

There are a lot of negative comments below the article about Benson doing that. I don't see anything wrong with it. He is the Pope, but he is still human. He grew up and lives in this modern world and knows what's going on. I know there are certain etiquette things that you are supposed to follow when you have an audience with the Pope, but how many chances do you get to show off your Supebowl ring to Him. Besides, maybe the Pope asked to see it. He is smiling while looking at it, and he does look interested. He doesn't looked perturbed or put out. Like I said before, I think he's a Saints fan. Maybe Benson got his ring blessed while he was there.

What he is a fan of is the millions of $ the Bensons give to Catholic Charities.
Or maybe I'm cynical......

Much todo about nothing, Mista Benson went to see the Pope and wore the finest piece of jewelry in his collection, didn't look like the Pope was upset about it

I would think this is more likely the case.

Considering the Pope is a person and world leader, and the Saints Superbowl was the most watched, most KNOWN NFL Football event in history, I would imagine the Pope would want to see the ring.

The team is named after "All Saints Day" and the "Saints" - both religious origins from the Catholic Church.

True, any catholic clergy MUST be a fan of the Saints or Cardianls, or face possible excommunication.:)

Just as all Catholic clergy must be fans of the Padre's or Cardinals in Baseball.

Tom just makes me roll my eyes though. First he wants to
move the Saints to San Antone but the NFL stops him, now
he acts like our Superbowl win was all about him. *eyeroll*
