Looking at whether Reggie Bush is tradeable

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal

In an article for NewOrleans.com, longtime Saints beat writer Brian Allee-Walsh spoke with an “astute NFL deal maker” about Reggie Bush’s future.

They talked about his value to the Saints and whether his contract would be easy to restructure. It all made sense, but a quote about Bush’s trade value caught our eye. The deal maker estimated Bush could get a “firm fourth-round pick that could go to a conditional three’’ in a trade.

The Saints surely wish that was true.

Bush would have to work out a new contract with another team, and that team would have to come to terms with the Saints. While Bush would have plenty of value as a free agent, we think this is overestimating his pull over the rest of the NFL.

Teams simply don’t give up draft picks for free when they know that player needs to be cut. We’re not in April anymore. The Saints can’t keep Bush on their roster at his current salary, so teams can wait them out.

If Bush was a better player, perhaps the Saints could pull this off. But a strong free agent running back market will make it very difficult.

DeAngelo Williams, Ahmad Bradshaw, and Darren Sproles are among the players that are excellent on third downs and won’t require trade compensation. Other “workhorse” backs will fill roles elsewhere, while guys like Joseph Addai, Brandon Jackson, and Jason Snelling will also get jobs.

At a time when teams will be furiously making moves, we highly doubt Bush will be so desired that someone will give up a draft pick and a big deal for a player that has had such an inconsistent NFL career.

Reggie is not trade-able!

That is why it is so disturbing that the numskulls over at WhoDatDish would publish this nonsense:

We'll offer, he'll decline.

He'll counter, we'll decline.

I'd love to say that Reggie will wake up and realize how good he's got it with Payton & Brees and the entire offense...

But he may just be the jaded, selfish KID from Southern Cal who he's recently grown into.

This talk will go on and on until the season starts. If he stays our offense will be unstoppable once again with the addition of Ingram. I seriously doubt he leaves. He knows, the offices knows and so do the fans that he needs to restructure. I don't see him being selfish and going for more money. I think he stays.

I hope your right B dub. I'm seeing it a little different. Yea the money will be worked out ( for whoever he plays with). I just don't think he want's to be playing behind two maybe three other backs. The guy wants to play be a starter. But what do I know......He knows he can't take all the hits for a full season. So maybe he will stay.....
