Saints and the salary cap

Saints Nation: Rookie Pay Wage Set, Saints' Salary Cap Status | July

The salary cap looks like it's going to be set at $120 million. Right now the Saints are at about... $105 million with a bunch of players they need to re-sign. They'll hopefully get some immediate relief by extending Drew Brees and restructuring/release Reggie Bush, but the Saints are right up against the cap. It's going to be tough to spend on Lance Moore, Carl Nicks, Roman Harper, Jonathan Goodwin, Jermon Bushrod etc... there's going to be some tough decisions. The Saints have a lot of unrestricted free agents to deal with. There should be a lot of movement very soon. Guys like Devery Henderson and Randall Gay who have large contracts are also at risk.
So we're 15 million under the cap and could probably be 25 million under by merely renegotiaing with Bush, Henderson, and Gay.

I'm not convinced we're right up against the cap at all.

Even $25 million may not go far considering all the FAs the Saints have

We only have a few big time FA's. The rest are middle of the road salaries.

If Loomis can't get it done, don't bother trying anyone else. There's a reason he was mis-labelled as strictly a bean-counter by many.

I suspect he'll either cut or renegotiate with high cap players, and sign cap friendly deals with our studs.

The cap is the least of my worries, IMO.

I think Gay is going to get cut, with Greer, Porter, Robinson, Patrick we are pretty set at the CB Position. Henderson may also be gone, if Moore re-signs, he will defiantly take a pay cut if this happens. Saints are in a good position.

We can add approximately 20 million simply by cutting or restructuring these guys...

It only lists their 2011 salary, so their cap savings may be a bit less, but you get the point...

Reggie Bush - RB - $11,800,000
Alex Brown - DE - $5,500,000
Randall Gay - CB - $3,500,000
Devery Henderson - WR - $2,250,000
Kawika Mitchell - LB - $2,750,000

My thoughts exactly. Our cap-ologist is top notch.

In Loomis We Trust .... anyone important will be back next year and he'll run circles around the salary cap just like he does every year

At first I was surprisedto see so many FA's on our roster but then it hit me.......we put our eggs in the short term basket(we won a Superbowl) and now we are paying the price with so many FA's to sign. Loomis will really have to be creative in the near future.

That only has to do with NFL rules. When you pick up a vet during the season, you're responsible for his entire salary for that season (pro-rated for the games he plays for you).

We only had to pay him for the 5 games he was with us, but we had to pay him at his 2010 rate. So he cost us 5/16th of his 2.75 mill (roughly 860,000).

He won't make near that much in 2011, and he knows it.

Is anyone else here thinking what I have been thinking lately. I've been thinking about this whole thing where free agency is now going to be compressed from its usual five or six months into, what did they say it would be, the whole signing thing is now going to be about twenty minutes long or so, LOL. It will be a mad dash. And I think this could actually help the Saints, because they can just have guys on speed dial, with offers ready, boom boom boom. And players -- especially non-superstar, lower echelon players -- are not going to really be able to drag their feet, or wait around and mull things over, or "test the waters" or play the "I got to feed my family" card. Free agency is going to be so fast and furious this year, it's gonna be like, if the Saints are on the line with an offer, you almost have to either TAKE IT or LEAVE IT in the space of just a few days or weeks. Not a lot of room to haggle. Agents are not gonna be able to shop players around quite AS MUCH as they might be able to, in a whole long off season. So if free agency becomes a mad scramble, with all teams racing against the clock, this might actually help the Saints KEEP guys rather than lose them.

Or it could backfire completely and go the other way, I don't know.

In Loomis I trust!
