Personally I think this was the right choice. Williams and Payton must think he's worth every penny. His highlight video is incredible. Looks like we're keeping the right people. So far we haven't lost anybody that would hurt our chances of getting to the SuperBowl. I think Harper may really shine this year because we have better players in front of him. Perhaps if we put more of a pass rush, Harper won't be so exposed in coverage which isn't supposed to be a SS top skill. |

While some may not agree with this signing, I trust in Payton, Loomis and Williams. |

"He's a Pro Bowl safety. He's one of our best football players," Williams said back in January. "I desperately want him back."
Harper (6 feet, 1 inch, 200 pounds) became a starter as a rookie in 2006 after the Saints drafted him in the second round out of Alabama, but he especially bloomed after Williams arrived in 2009 Williams has embraced Harper's versatility, using him as a blitzer and run defender as well as in pass coverage. Harper had 100 tackles, three sacks, one interception and five forced fumbles last season. Dating back to 2006, Harper ranks second among all NFL safeties with 9.5 sacks and fourth among all NFL safeties with 11 forced fumbles. And that doesn't include the ball he stripped during the Saints' NFC championship game victory over Minnesota en route to Super Bowl XLIV. |
So for $11.8mm (Bush) we get Sproles, Harper, a Safety and future draft choice from Miami for good measure.
Not a bad day! :) |

I wish they would include Shaun Rogers as Newcomer...would look close to accurate!

Good sign...and a payday for much more than I figured. Good for him. He's a solid player IMO. Good job Loomis!

Guess they looked at the market and decided he was the best buy at this time...
Glad to see we got the Green Bay Fullback... |

Wait ... what happened to the" Hometown Discount"?

Excellent signing. We kept a pro-bowl SS and paid him what he's worth.
I feel compelled to point out that Roman Harper got quite a bit more than Reggie Bush did? I guess GW actually does think he's one of the best players on this defense. |
wow never thought he would get that much. i guess he has been working on his hands. they must think his int will increase. other than that cha ching all the way to the bank

I can see continuity and fail-safe planning; but don't understand committing that much unless the new CBA forces teams to spend the money... Two points... GW is an improved DC than what the Saints had, but he's been fired from other jobs for being wrong before; so citing his game balls as if they came down from the heavens is over the top... Second, yes journalist and panelist voted Harper to a ProBowl; these same people recently said that Drew Brees was not a Top 3 current player in the NFL... |

The highlight videos shows that Harper gives himself a good angle, has very good closing speed and wraps up well when making the tackle. I love how he goes for the ball all the time, his tackles are so aggressive, thats why he forces so many fumbles, I mean he's forced 6 fumbles in each of the last two seasons. His problem as you said is top end speed, thats why he is very good at defending TE's. GW loves this guy and Harper will not forget what happened in Seattle, he will use it to get better! Everybody has bad games, it's just how you react the next time you play that shows what type of player you are. You can sit and dwell on it or you can get on the field and make sure it doesn't happen again! |
It's time to put that Seattle game behind us and move on . . . Harper has shown that he is a solid SS in the league and has done better since GW arrived in town.
The Seattle game was an example of what you get when your offense ham-strings the game plan with its inability to run the ball and stay on the field and when your top defensive man, Malcolm Jenkins - who was clearly depended upon by everyone, including Harper - is out with injuries. |
I like Harper. He's a solid player. Other players at his position were over-paid during this shortened offseason. Finding a suitable replacement was not possible this year which was only made worse by the shortened offseason. Harper is one of those players who truly benefited from the lockout. His limitations were exposed during the Seattle game to the league. He's an in the box safety. The Saints over-paid for him. But, he's good enough to get the job done.

Everyone can say what they want about Roman, but he's a hell of a safety. He's had a few stinker games (Seattle for certain) but is easily our best option moving forward. Of course there are things he can work on, and I'm sure he will, but his ball homing skills and willingness to hit helmet-to-helmet with anyone are under appreciated it seems. He got paid, and I'm glad, because he works his ass off on the field, which is more than you can hope for from most of the guys in todays league. Congratulations on the big payday Roman. Strip some more balls from AP for us, and help send us to another Superbowl. WHO DAT!

I think they said this on NFLN yesterday. Now the Saints have one of the best Safety tandems in the league. So say the "Duke"
