New Orleans Saints will move some practices to Oxnard, Calif., this month

The New Orleans Saints are planning to move a portion of their training camp practices to Oxnard, Calif., between their second and third preseason games, according to league sources.

The team has not confirmed any plans, but various sources have confirmed that they have been making plans to take the team to Southern California to break up their camp routine. Details have not been finalized, but hey will likely travel following their preseason game at Houston on Aug. 20, then spend several days practicing in Oxnard before their Aug. 28 game at Oakland.

The Dallas Cowboys have been training in Oxnard off and on for years, including when Saints Coach Sean Payton was there as an assistant coach in 2004 and 2005. The River Ridge practice fields in Oxnard, which is about one hour north of Los Angeles, are adjacent to a Residence Inn.

The Saints took their training camp on location to Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss., during Payton's first three years as head coach from 2006-2008. But they moved back home to the team's Metairie practice facility in 2009.

I guess we can look forward to some scrimmages against the Raiders prior to the actual game.
Interesting.....

Oh great I leave the area and come to Cleveland and they go to CA... just great, lol.

Budsdrinker 08-09-2011 12:20 PM

Not a bad idea.

@jeffduncantp: Current weather in Oxnard, per @WeatherChannel: 62 degrees, "feels like" 62. Current weather in Nola: 91 "feels like" 104.

Players are going to enjoy a break from the HEAT!!!

crawgator 08-09-2011 12:40 PM

I love this idea. since I live in Bakersfield Ca.. I hope to see a few practices..
GEAUX SAINTS!!!!

saintfan 08-09-2011 01:18 PM

They should come to Napa...I could make a practice or two up there. SOC is a bit far for me from East Bay. Damn it!

SaintsBro 08-09-2011 01:36 PM

Can't have Jim Henderson getting himself all heat stroked up on the sidelines like that. I'm all in favor of the move to cooler climes. This will get the players acclimated to the chilling, freezing 88 degree temperatures they will face in the Frozen Tundra of Green Bay in early September.

I don't thing this is a good idea. Yeah they get a break from the weather but guys get just as tired of moving around so much and there not in the confired of there own homes.

homerj07 08-09-2011 09:37 PM

This is a good idea on many fronts, weather, travel, practice, etc.

strato 08-09-2011 09:54 PM

Take me with you...please.

QBREES9 08-09-2011 11:07 PM

Plus now that they no longer have two a days its kinda soft. Camp is supposed to be hot, hard, and brutal. From top to bottom the NFL are starting to caudle these guys too much.

Like the idea, they should do this more often, it'll probably broaden the fan-base as well.

Because thats how it always was done? I'm all for cutting practises down as long as you get done what you need. Its one thing to be a 16-17 year old kid in highschool having two-a-days, then your body heals real fast and its not a big deal but the difference is monumental once you get older.

I'm close to 30 and still playing. I've been to numerous national team camps in the summer with both 2 and 3 practises a day and I can tell you its no walk in the park anymore. You get tired and sloppy and a lot pore injury prone, and the reps become lower quality.

You would fit right in..lol...:p

I like it. Already WCoast, Frisco play out doors, less distractions away from home. Payton will probably plan some group hugs. I like it.

You suck...

Just kidding of course. I'm up in East Bay and so it's a bit far for me. While they're down there, see if you can put a bug in somebody's ear about coming up to Napa next year. A little Saints / Raiders preseason practice rumble...yeah, that'd be cool.

Saintfan no prob's, its all good!!

I think its a good move. A little cooler weather might do a whole lot in keeping guys from straining muscles. Hamstring and calf injuries are more common when its really hot and you loose a lot of fluid.

the-commish 08-16-2011 12:59 PM

I am planning to be at the Wednesday practice session. Maybe I will get to meet a few of you fellow WhoDats there.

EDIT: PM me anyone who will be there Wednesday if you want to meet up, share stories, etc.
