Saints bring in Cobbs, RB/KR for a look see

Saints signed RB/KR Patrick Cobbs, formerly of the Dolphins.

Cobbs was a long-time favorite of Fins coach Tony Sparano. He must have been something to behold in practices because he rarely had a game-day impact in Miami. Cobbs is a roster longshot in a deep Saints backfield.

WTF?

alexonfyre 08-16-2011 05:15 PM

The ONLY explanations I can think of (other than "Why not?") Is that Joe Morgan impressed as a WR enough that they are considering picking up a dedicated KR/PR to avoid injuries. Either that or they don't want Joe to get complacent because of his big play, and brought in a vet to compete with him.

Beastmode 08-16-2011 05:17 PM

They just want to see what else is out there and you can't blame them. Except for Ingram, all our starting RB's have been down for the count at some point. Why not look at them in advance. If somebody goes down you have the list narrowed down somewhat.

Danno 08-16-2011 05:23 PM

He's good on special teams, and Ivory will likely be placed on IR, Bell is out 2 to 3 weeks, and they don't want to overwork PT, Ingram and Sproles.

They probably don't wanna force Chris Taylor to run the ball 30 times per game the next three weeks.

Gotta have someone to run the ball for the last 3 quarters for the next 3 weeks.

Cruize 08-16-2011 05:40 PM

Special teams players are not as valuable as they once were. All the Saints kickoffs should be touchbacks. For the teams that manage to score on the Saints, most will have a kicker capable of kicking it deep into the end zone. I had rather have a guy like Sharper who can play safety at atleast an above average level on the team rather than a guy like Reis who nobody wants to see in the starting lineup.

With our D, you can expect to see a lot more punts than kick offs.

Thats a good point Cruize. Punt coverage is now the main unit to address.

Sproles has been very healthy especially considering his size.

Why not get Hamilton back or has he already signed somewhere else? I mean he deserves the chance, doesn't he?

They may have asked him. Who knows?

That sounds like a great idea

He took the roster spot that was vacated when the Saints released offensive tackle Jon Stinchcomb on Monday. The Saints are a bit thin at tailback with Chris Ivory and Joique Bell both sidelined by injuries.
Think that pretty much explains it, first game of the preseason and we already have injuries...

Arrrgh. We need to start putting our tailbacks in Iron Man suits.

73Saint 08-16-2011 10:38 PM

I'm starting to worry a little that we may not see Ivory this year. Hope I'm wrong...

Ashley 08-16-2011 10:53 PM

??? I'm so lost.
I get all the points made, but still... They know what they are doing so

44-4ever 08-16-2011 11:59 PM

In the media briefing after practice yesterday, Coach Payton mentioned Cobbs will be wearing jersey #44. Hope the dude does justice to my favorite number, and if so, maybe he will be good enough to make the team and give us another backfield weapon.

FinSaint 08-17-2011 05:22 AM

I hope they at least considered bringing in Hamilton 'cos that would've been the right thing to do.

I know what you are saying but I don't think the coaching staff is overly concerned with "doing the right thing" as much as putting a winning team on the field.

I agree, but I just thought that 'cos the early reports were positive on Hamilton's condition and practicing - and that he was just a roster casualty in the first place - that he would make the team better instead of bringing in somebody, who has no familiarity with the Saints' system.

Crusader 08-17-2011 07:33 AM

Might be they want to look at another type of player.

But Lynell would know right off that when Bell and Ivory heal, he's gone.

He may be waiting for a team that loses a RB for the season, instead of being a temporary fill-in for a team needing a camp body RB.

hagan714 08-17-2011 08:40 AM

he is not bad for #4

alexonfyre 08-17-2011 09:02 AM

Yeah, I think the issues with Lynell were deeper than what we have been told. If he was in shape and ready to compete for a job, he would have been signed by someone by now.

Well at least according to Jeff Duncan's camp reports he was performing well and had no injuries. All signs pointed to him being cut 'cos they needed to trim down the roster and so that he might be able to find a spot on some other team's roster.

At least I haven't caught any news of him joining some other team, so he should be available... but as Danno stated he might not want to be just a temporary fill-in for pre-season... still if no one is interested in his services, maybe he should take it as a chance to show other teams what he can do in the pre-season games where he'd get national exposure and quiet any talks there might exist about this health.

Just a thought...

st thomas 08-17-2011 11:38 AM

it sounded more like they did'nt like how he came into camp. Hamiltons body was not what they wanted to see. a lot has to do with that dammed lockout. he probably did'nt rehab the way he was suposed to. and it cost him a shot. did;nt we think he would have gotten pick-up quickly? somethings not right. patrick cobb? come on.

Can't really blame them for that...

But seriously, I guess there has to be something more to it, I just based what I stated on the things JD of TP reported from camp practices early on.

crawgator 08-17-2011 12:24 PM

All I see here is that the Saint's needed cannon Fodder for the preseason.. Why get one of our stars hurt.. Let this guy take the heat and I'm sure it didn't cost the team a lot to bring him in.. Will he be here when the season starts probably not..

GEAUX SAINTS!!!!

He might be a long shot, but remember that the SP let's EVERYONE compete for a job. I can't even tell you what type of runner Cobbs is, I haven't seen his tape, but if he rocks the house this Saturday he should and will have a shot to beat Taylor or Bell or anyone. I try not to judge a player by his past but on what he is doing right now. If Saturday rolls around and he sucks, I will agree with you then.
